I had a hiatal hernia repair, and I don't think my recovery was any worse. I did take my pain medicine regularly about the first week.

On day 6, it was like a switch and I started feeling better and being able to take drinks, rather than sips.

I don't have any more specific info on the hernia, as I see my doctor tomorrow.

I am 2 weeks post op (today) and I feel great.

Hope this helps!

I have been having lots of problems standing and just got my band removed and sleeve at the same time. I was told that my doc fixed a hiatal hernia that I had. I have no pain except for the ng tube at the hospital and gas in my shoulder now. It should work out great for you. Good luck!!!! I guess it is common to have a hiatal hernia seem to read it a lot on this forum.

Yep. I had one repaired. I had to take the pain meds for two full weeks because of it. It wasn't horrific or anything, but I really did need to take it that long. Right at two weeks it just stopped hurting.

The pain the hernia was causing me was much worse though, so I was really glad to get it fixed.

I had a haital hernia repaired with my sleeve and I wouldn't have known if he hadn't told me. My recovery was great. I slept in a recliner chair the first two nights home because it was most comfortable. I had surgery Monday morning, home Tuesday afternoon and I think my last pain pill was on Thursday. I didn't need to use many of them so I consider myself really lucky. I think the hernia repair is just a couple stitches, not a big deal compared to what they'll do to your stomach!

I had my EGD last month and they told me I also have a hiatal hernia that will need to be repaired. It must be common for overweight people to have them since so many of us will need them repaired during our VSG's.

First, it is very, very common for them to find hiatal hernias. I had one but I didn't know about it until my follow-up visit 7 days later lol! My surgeon was showing me pictures of the procedure and he was like "and that was your hernia"... kinda felt bad because the first thing I blurted out was "did you fix it?" he looked kinda hurt and was like "of course I fixed it, I wasn't going to leave it there!"

I was on pain meds for only a couple days after I got home (so maybe 4-5 days after the day of the surgery including in the hospital). I have heard many people say they didn't need any at all, so maybe because I had the hernia I had more pain? But either way, it wasn't anything horrible. Oh, and the other thing is that my surgery was a bit longer because of it... but I certainly didn't know the difference!

Good luck and don't let it worry you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
