Irrational Fear That This Won't Work!

Recommended Posts

I am so glad I found this forum. Your stories helped me make the decision to have sleeve surgery to "save my life".

I am currently almost four weeks post op and although I have lost 23.5 lbs, I have a hard time believing that this procedure will work for me. It probably sounds pretty silly. I know I'm doing everything I should be doing at this points (sans getting 80g of Protein a day), so technically, I should lose weight. BUT...

I keep thinking, "I don't believe that this will work for me. The sleeve won't work."

I can't imagine being smaller than I am now. I've been overweight for so long that my mind won't let me believe that I will ever be a normal weight.

Has anyone else had this irrational fear? Sleeve masters, could you shed some light on your mindset during the start of your sleeve journey?

I know how you feel. I'm a month and a half out and have lost some weight but it's not enough to see a "huge change" yet. I keep hoping and praying that I will get to a point and say "Wow, you have lost a LOT of weight!" So far, the changes are subtle and I keep wanting the time to fly and the weight to fall off :-). It's a work in progress, as they say.

I think most of us get that. I'm just below goal right now, and still expect to see high numbers on the scale every morning, we have had years of training in 'thinking fat', tiny tummies, and smaller waists don't re-train our minds.

In fact my scale weighs in stone and lbs, and I am so used to the higher number being how many stone I am, that my mind still swaps the number round because that is the way it has always been!!

You will succeed, and the great thing about the sleeve is it works weather you trust it or not! ;)

I'm feeling the same way. I already failed with a band/had a band fail for me, however you look at it. I can't even imagine myself with the weight gone. My surgery is next Tuesday and it still doesn't feel like a real thing yet.

KatyB! I, too, have had a band fail, and I'm scheduled for a sleeve next Tuesday, the 27th!

Just remember that the sleeve doesn't work all by itself, you make it work! Set your goals, make a plan, follow it and I guarantee it will work for you! Best of luck.

I'm right there with you!! I'm at a 2 week stall that almost EVERYone experiences, yet I'm still sitting here having my 600-800 calories a day thinking "this is it. 40 lbs is all I'm getting." I KNOWWWWW that's not true. Every single "diet" I've been on my entire life has had periods of non-loss even though I was doing everything right. Then the drop would come. So, why wouldn't it with this all the more? It will. We just have to keep knowing that it will.

I am feeling that way now.. I keep thinking there is no way that I will ever lose enough weight to really matter. I failed with the lap band this will fail too. I hope that I am proven wrong. Treadmill soon to be delivered and hopefully using my tools I will prove myself wrong. Jill

I am 5 months out and 72 lbs down. I think the same thing sometimes, but then I put food on my plate and eat 6-7 bites and I'm full. Then I remember, woo hoo, it's still working. Hang in there.

Thank you guys for your words of encouragement. You have made me feel a lot better. It's good to know that I'm not the only one having these irrational fears. I guess the time is not passing by quick enough or I can't see the weight loss in the mirror.

I will use this tool to my advantage and make sure that the first six months count.

Still, I know I need to find a VSG group in my area to continue to talk about this.

Isn't Forest Park Medical Center Great?? THat's where I had my surgery, but with Dr. Kim. I know he has a weekly support group. His office is in Colleyville. Call and see if you can go. ( I can't because I live 900 miles away. boo.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
