Lactose Intolerant To Protein Shake?

Recommended Posts

I drink Body Fortress whey isolate. Every time I drink it, I get horrible stomach cramping and diarrhea about 30 minutes to 1 hour later. But, I've been living with it just to make sure I get my Protein in. I can still eat other dairy product just fine. Anyway, I'm tired of it so I'm thinking about switching to soy protein. Is there a difference taste wise? Or are there different types of Protein Shakes that are lactose free?

hi

Thanks for posting this.I had my first Protein drink yesterday..only a tiny bit and my goodness the feeling was terrible...feels like a tightness around my ribcage, gas in my insides and pain like gas or something...I thought it was just because it was the first time.Today I really had only 2 sips before it started again.I cannot do this.It is now 40 minutes later and I still feel this.I dont have diaree though.

What is this and now how to do the Proteins?

Well you have several options... you can take the lactose pills that are available or try powdered Unjury chicken broth (my favorite) or the unflavor Protein powdered. Since my sugery I have not been able to drink whey or soy Protein Powder. This seems to be a common problem among several of the sleevers on this forum.

I got terrrible cramping and diahrea in the beining from most Protein Shakes and I was lactose intolorant!!! The good news is that it finally went away!!! I think it does for most of us. In the meantime, I won't lie, it's a little work finding the right shake. But there are definitely soy based Protein shakes on the market. The brand that works best for me is nectar. It's still whey protein but somehow it was the only one that did not affect me. I mixed in in Crystal light or in soy milk. It comes in lots of flavors such as vanilla torte or chocolate truffle as well as an assortment of fruit flavors. The down side is it comes in these huge containers of 32 oz. ! Which is a lot if it doesn't work. But somebody told me you can ask to try a sample before you buy. So, I'll know to do that next time. Good luck with this. I know it's a pain. But for me it was worth the trouble! :-)

I became lactose intolerant right after surgery as well but a month later it seems to have resolved on its own. I talked to my surgeon and nut about it and they've both said that it usually does go away with time. Maybe you should try a different Protein Drink. I drink Isopure (the flavors I like are Cookies and cream and the strawberry). I buy them at the Vitamin Shoppe and they are both lactose free. You should probably try different ones until you find something that works best for you. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
