So So Hungry...this Is Embarassing

Recommended Posts

I am on day 9 post op, and I am so hungry that I can't really think about anything else. I guess I thought the hunger would go away. I'm taking 2 pepcid daily, so this shouldn't be acid. Does this mean the sleeve is not going to work for me? I'm ready to cry.

I was hungry at first too and read that sometimes it takes time for the Ghrelin to leave your system. That is the hormone that tells your brain that you are hungry. Give your system time to adjust to everything you just did to your body. I hope this helps!

I don't remember who told me this, I think it was feedyoureye?? But she said that to remember that just because our surgery just happened, and they took out the portion of the stomach that makes ghrelin, doesn't mean that the hormone isn't still floating in our bodies. It DOES take a while to adjust. I honestly had a REALLY hard time in the beginning, was one of the ones that felt hungry. It took a couple of weeks for it to go away. Add on top of that the mental anguish, or difficulty, of just KNOWING you can't eat, and it's tough. There is a huge physical and mental adjustment in the first month....just hang in there, honey. It WILL get better, I promise. I thought I would be one of the lucky (?) ones that would have NO hunger and would have to force myself to get in nourishment. Not so ^_^ But now I am happy I can eat whatever/however, and have never had any problems with anything!

I still feel hungry, but it's normal now, not like that gnawing hunger like before. And it's much less than before the surgery. Your body will level out and find it's balance. But it will take a while. Once you are able to eat 'real food', a lot of that hunger, both head and physical, go away. You don't feel deprived anymore, either mentally or physically. Remember, you can eat as much as you can handle now, as long as it's in your guidelines. 9 days out, you on pureeds, yet? Or full liquids? Just keep getting in those blended cream Soups, smoothies, blended bean with bacon Soup, whatever you are allowed to have which will enable you feel as if you are getting food in your body.

Like I said, it does get better, Sweets!! The first couple weeks/month are the hardest. It was more of an adjustment that I expected, that's for sure. And I thought I had read everything and prepared for everything!

There's light at the end of the tunnel!! I promise! Eat what you can to feel satisfied, progress as your doctor says, it will work out and you will be so happy in three months

Same with me. But, I was distressed because after my husband had the surgery he was not hungry at all, from day one. Me, I was hungry and my stomach felt hungry. I found that I needed two antiacids each day, I was quite a little acid producer. I have also found that the longer away from my surgery date the less hungry I feel. It is two months out now and I feel hungry about twice a day but it takes very little to fill me up. I also think it has something to do with your stomach healing.

You will be fine. Everybody goes through the feeling that it will not work for them. It will.

Concentrate on your liquids. Make absolutely certain you are getting in a minimum of 64 oz of Water a day. That will help with the hungry feeling. Keep taking the antacid, but if the hungry feeling continues, you may need a different one. Talk to your doctor's office and let them help you. This isn't a science. We are all working trial and error here, which may be why this board is so active! :)

Good luck!! :)

I find that when I am not busy doing something I am thinking about food...what the kids and hubby had for dinner and what i'm gonna be able to eat in 2 weeks....well if I am busy I don't think about it and I don't dream about it.

Husband asked me last night..."Wife, did ya buy me any candy bars?" I said "nope" those will be something you will need to buy from here on out!...It's like an addict, who tries to run around with others who are doing the drugs or alcohol in front of them. It's hard for the recovering addict not to partake. I really wish people who don't have a weight problem would understand that.

I think day 9 was about when I started obsessing about making it to the two-week mushie stage of scrambled eggs and cottage cheese and stuff like that. Those scrambled eggs couldn't come soon enough. Boy, did they taste good.

I was super hungry and cranky and my poor hubby kept finding excuses to get out of the house, where he'd order something like Double Whopper and come back with a smile on his face. Poor guy.

I second (or third) all the advice already on here. I think that's when I started quietly freaking out a little bit, thinking, 'oh my God, what have I done to myself and it didn't work.'

You came to the right place. This is such a supportive group and there isn't any question they haven't heard before.

Hang in there, you'll get there ...

Carol

Thanks for all of your advice. I did drink more Water today, and that helped. I also took a nap in my car at lunch time, that helped too.

Tonight I had cream of potato Soup, probably not the best choice, but my list does say I can have creamed Soups. I avoided the chunks, but I guess I could have blended them. I haven't had anything but Protein shakes for almost three weeks, so the soup was fabulous!

I love this board!!! I swear I can find a topic on everything I'm going through. I'm 2 days out and my mind is losing the fight with my stomach for the first time ever! I starting taking a Zantac today and that helped. I said to myself this afternoon, "what have I done?" ! It's hard but everyone on this board has been through what I've been through and seeing the weight loss and positive stories is so encouraging! Man, I can't weight until I can eat an egg!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
