American Gp Totally Against Wls. :(

Recommended Posts

I went to my GP today and she totally discouraged me. Is NOT a fan of weight loss surgery at all. I got the same ol, same ol', "diet and exercise and let's send you to a nutritionist". I didn't even WANT to tell her that I was considering going to Mexico. Good god I can only imagine the lecture I would have gotten.

I emailed Dr. Kelly to ask how they handle this. I would obviously have to go back to Dr. Kelly if I had any complications.

Anybody else deal with their GP being dead against it? meanwhile another friend of mine who had a bypass said her bariatric team here in the US feels that the sleeve surgery is showing a LOT of promise.

I feel so let down.

Sounds like you need a new GP. My GP was ecstatic and even more that I had the guts to do it in TJ,Mx. The tripped out when I went in to take out my stitches and I had lost 40lbs. I guess I was fortunate that he had worked with alot of bariactric doctors in the past. Good luck and never let a doc discourage you

My gp is completely against wls as well - so I am going with a new doctor for post op. That way I have full support as I lose weight if I need additional testing or medical care.

Thats exactly what I am saying. You gotta go back to your gp and say its been nice knowing you but you just lost my business. Please transfer all my files to such and such so that I can get proper care.

My GP was a dream! She recommended me to the Medical Centers Bariatric center, has gotten me lots of blood tests and is thrilled at my success. Find someone who will be a great medical support for your procedure. Someone out there is right for you!

I say - get it done. Let him deal with it after the fact. If he still harps about it - change dr's ( or now if you need him for insurance help)

It's like a quote I love from my favorite Canadian feminist...

My GP has been 150% supportive. She flat out said with my hypothyroid and screwy metabolism, a restrictive procedure is the only thing that will work for me. I hope you find an understanding and supportive GP. I recommend internists.

Do you have to have your GP's approval if your self pay? I have always been confused about this. I'm sure you have to with insurance, but I'm not even sure about that?

No, but I did want to go to her for follow up labs. It will be completely separate from her now. I'll do all of my follow ups with my surgeon.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
