Okay - this may be TMI for those of you that are squeamish. But this is one of those areas that I really learned a lot about AFTER the surgery, and maybe someone else will benefit from learning about this part of it.

I have never coped well with throwing up - but after the surgery I found that if I ate too much or ate too fast and it was sitting in my esophagus causing me pain, the best thing to do was to throw up. It's different than when I use to get sick with the flu. It's like you just bend over and burp a little bit and up it comes. Usually, only the amount of a bite or so will come up and it's very easy. I still hate to throw up but when I need to for relief I do because it helps SO much. I have a very restrictive sleeve and it took me a long time to figure out how much I could eat, how slowly to eat, what foods I could tolerate, etc. so in the beginning I'm afraid I did my fair share of getting sick. Now, I very, very rarely have to.

Agree with Sara on all of the above, except that when I overeat or eat something that my sleeve doesn't like, it's not just one bite that comes up. Mine preferred to totally empty, which isn't pleasant, but it's not like being sick from before. It's actually not as bad as the pain involved in trying NOT to be sick, if that makes sense.

It's been several months since I had to throw up, by the way--eventually you learn how to eat with and for your sleeve, and the issue resolves.

My doctor told me that the esophagus sends signals that food is stuck and it makes your glands create a lot of saliva to help it down. I've found that when it gets that bad I can usually just lean over a sink and just the slime will come up, then I feel relief. But occasionally that last bite will come with it as well. I wash out my mouth and lesson learned!

I also agree with the above posts.... Whenever I eat too much or too fast I get the slilmes.. I HATE to throw up because it makes me feel terrible and pee my pants.. (I know TMI) But now post op--- if I need to throw up all I do is go to the RR and lean over the toilet and open my mouth.. it just comes up.. not even a gut wrenching puke just like a baby spitting up. I don't even pee my pants.

After I throw up/spit up I feel SOOO MUCH BETTER! One day I will learn to eat slower, chew my food better, and don't eat too much!!! YEA RIGHT!!! I am 4 months post op and I have only done this 7-8 times. It is getting better, I am learning my bodys signals.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
