Need your advice................New Port

Recommended Posts

I am going to get the low profile port put in on Thurs. This other one sticks out too much and it is on my waist band area where it is very uncomfortable to wear clothes in that area.

My doctor suggested to move it down further instead of upwards and I wonder if I will get uncomfortable there too from pressure from pants.

I know this as already been asked but please give me suggestions on where to have this one put. Where is your port located?

Thanks

Josephine

Hi Josephine,

Mine is about 2 inches under my rib cage on the right side and I don't even know it's there.

LInda,

Hell of a loss !!!! Way to go !!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for responding. If you have had any fills though, how are they getting through your rib cage?

Sorry, I should have said below my rib cage. My port is easy to feel if you press and my surgeon has no problem finding my port. He doesn't use fluro.

I was just curious, what is the procedure for replacing the port? Is it done in an office visit under local or is it another surgery?

It is back to the hospital for me under general anestesia. He will use the same incision where the other port is. I got lucky that the insurance is covering this too. It is too bad though that I wasn't given the choice in the first place. The low profile port was just 700.00 more and now with another surgery it is going to be over 5000.00. My portion will be about 1400.00.

I just had a port revision a few weeks ago (mine was tipped and they couldn't access it). Mine is right on the waistline, so I'm no help to you there, but I wanted to reassure you that it's a pretty minor operation and I was feeling great within a few days. They didn't use general on me, it was conscious sedation (they give you something to relax you through an iv, but don't put you out). I don't remember a thing.

As with most things, it varies from doc to doc. Some will do it with a local right in their office. I was happy to be put down - less nerve wracking if you ask me!

Mine's on my waistline too but most of my pants, jeans etc are midrise and barely come up to my navel so I never even feel my port. You can wear a lower rise without your bum crack showing, lol.

Mine is about 4" below the bra line on the left side and doesn't give me a problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
