Mews 37 Posted March 13, 2012 I am so thankful that I found this forum! I've gotten so much information from all of you that I was able to make a well-educated decision in chosing the sleeve. I'm having surgery this Thursday (3/15) and I am a bit of a nervous wreck, so much so that my stomach is all wonky (either that or my stomach knows what's going on and is rebelling LOL). What is interesting though is that my doctor did not have me on a liquid diet before surgery. Is that normal or does it depend on doctor? I know I'll be doing two weeks of Clear liquids and then two weeks of full liquids after the surgery but no liquid diet requirement beforehand. I'm not complaining as I've done liquid diets before and know they are rough.
spadesmcloven 8 Posted March 13, 2012 Boy I would give anything for some solid meat right now. Just a piece of chicken lol. I am having surgery on the 16th. I am a revision to sleeve at 160. I got down to 129, but the past couples of years it has crept back up. I have been on liquids since sat. I did have some lunch meat the other day and a turkey link yesterday. It really helped. Where are you having your surgery?
blessedmomof2 4 Posted March 13, 2012 I am being sleeved on 3/21/12 and am having a little bit of a hard time also. I am not in a liquid diet but only one meal per day. And the preference is lean meat and veggies....but I dont care for too many veggies. My surgeon's requirement is just to loose a few pounds before surgery. I'm really nervous but I CAN DO THIS!!!! Good luck on ur surgery!!! 1 Priscilla Johnson Wright reacted to this
spadesmcloven 8 Posted March 13, 2012 Thank you! Same to you. I keep having to tell myself that I can do this. I don't know why it is so hard right at the moment. It will get better though.
Mews 37 Posted March 13, 2012 I'm having it done at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ. My doctor is Dr. Douglas Ewing.
Meljp 36 Posted March 13, 2012 I am 15 days post op and was only on a liquid diet for 2 days before my surgery. Odd how surgeons choose different pre op diets. I would think they would want the stomach clean of all foods...interesting....Best of Luck! and keep us posted....Blessings~Melanie)
spadesmcloven 8 Posted March 13, 2012 Great hearing from you ladies. Good luck to the both of you.
5ohGirl 0 Posted March 14, 2012 My surgery date is also on Thurs, 3/15... my doctor has had me on a liquid diet for the past 2 weeks... I've lost 9 lbs. His reasoning for having all of his sleeve patients do a liquid for 2 weeks is to shrink the liver as much as possible before the day of surgery. It's supposed to make things easier when he's in there moving organs around to do the surgery I guess. It's been somewhat of a drag though. I'll be on a liquid diet for at least 2 weeks after... Clear Liquids first week, then progressing to Protein Shakes the following week. Good luck to us all on our surgeries! Take care
spadesmcloven 8 Posted March 14, 2012 I am not going to lie I have cheated by taking a bite of turkey or two. I have been doing two meal supplements a day with Protein of course and Water and etc. I am down I believe 5 lbs since Saturday.....Hav you been drinking protein and have you cheated any?? 5ohGirl 0 Posted March 14, 2012 I've been using the Bari Essentials Protein Drink powders with skim milk... my doctor has had me drinking 4 of those shakes a day. They taste pretty good actually. Every other day I'll have some low-sodium chicken or beef broth just to vary from all the "sweet" tastes. I can have as much sugar free Jello as I want & sugar free popsicles too... TOTALLY sick of the jello though! LOL! I cheated very minorly at a family celebration on Saturday, had very small portion of spaghetti & salad. Oh yeah, one tiny peice of garlic bread too
sentos 12 Posted March 14, 2012 My doctor only required 5 days. I put myself on liquids earlier because I read it makes the liver shrink. I ate 2 saltine crackers today. I am afraid that I am going to have to eat a little something tomorrow because my job is so physical. I don't stop work until tues. I'm so ashamed. Will this mess me up? teamthin 7 Posted March 14, 2012 My doctor didn't require me to have a pre-op diet. I fasted last night for an endoscopy and Im having surgery in less than 24 hours. And the nurses gave me a menu. That means I get two more meals...lol
sentos 12 Posted March 14, 2012 I feel really bad because I fear that I'm going to struggle after my surgery. This is pure hunger. I have consumed maybe 370 calories today. My head is spinning! I'm drinking Water to stay full. It isn't cravings its hunger.
tfletch23 4 Posted March 14, 2012 My doc did not have me do liquid diet pre-op either. He told me to do the induction phase of Atkins starting 10 days before my surgery date. When I asked him why not the liquid, as I've read so many other people's dr put them on, he explained that it's been his experience that the liver looks no different in pts that've been on liquid Protein as opposed to Protein only food. The day before surgery, I ate half pound of bacon & 2 cheeseburgers with no bun. He said my liver looked awesome. Sent from my iPhone using VST
