New to the forum, a lot of helpful points that have been addressed and discussed on here. My weight loss journey started in December. I went to see Dr. balsalma in nj and since then have been to many doctor offices, gotten my Arm pricked for lots of blood samples, learned that I've got a fatty liver, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. but now three months later I've got a surgery date set for march 28th and I'm beyond excited. I am a 29 year old married mother of three , and have put myself off for quite some time now, and ready to get the old me back. With that said, my surgeon has not required any type of pre op diet. Basically the week before I was told to eat light and the day before liquids only. I'm curious as to why some have to diet before surgery and others don't.

Hi mama

All doctors are different. I was't required to have a pre-surgery diet either. But follow what your dr. says allows, today, tomorrow and like i said always.

glad you are getting a "hold" of yourself and realize you should be #1 too.

I was told the reason many dr.s want you to lose some weight prior to WLS is because of your fatty liver that we have.

i think i said that right.

OMG march 28 is right around the corner

best wishes

kathy

Some docs say that if you have a fatty liver, it can get nicked during the process so they put their patients on a diet before hand to help eliminate risks in nicking the fatty liver. ;)

The pre-op diet ideally does several things, importantly it firms your liver, puts you in a state of ketosis BEFORE you undergo the trauma of surgery.

I know surgeons are surgeons but they too have opinions often that are not the best...think of how many times a doctor has gave poor advise on something else...hmmm

The ketosis body of a patient that is obese and probably been on yo-yo diets or a heavy modern lifestyle is a complex thing. The actual yo-yo process people think of as giving up+some is actually a compound, aggregate condition that worsens as you go. I think some doctors fail to appreciate the extra complications for a WLS patient if they go into ketosis after surgery, rather than already be somewhat adjusted to it.

Alot of the "off" feelings many of us have after surgery are due in part to ketosis and the body adjusting gerlin, leptin, testosterone, estrogen, ets - and blood sugar.

If you can I would suggest you talk to your doctor and tell him you want a pre-op diet. If not many of us had them here and we could at least give you suggestions.

Very happy for you that you have made your decision and are well underway! Keep us posted.

PS - it is definately Ok for Mom to get her groove back...if you don't make yourself #1 at some point, you will have no #2's - because you will not be here.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
