I am probably going about this the wrong way, but I am watching a show on TLC called "The Real Skinny." It so far is about two people who have had surgery and are now experiencing a lot of loose skin. What is everyone's take on this? Is it common with VSG, even though the weight doesn't come off as fast as other surgeries, i.e. Gastric Bypass?

The weight does come off pretty quick... It really depends on your age and how far your skin has been stretched. I lost 180lbs in about 10 months and have a little bit of skin issues on my arms and stomach, but lately seems to be getting tighter. I know there is some cream too.

Dr.told me it is different for everyone. Just like pregnancy stretch marks. Some get it some do not? I will cross that bridge when I get to it. 1 thing at a time. Get healthy and look good first. Good luck!

Okay; Hate to give some tough love but really?

Show was about a 600+ pound man so you can not really compare. Now, about loose skin. Would you be willing to be skinnier and have some loose skin you can cover most of the time or be your current size?

Agree with previous poster, your age, ethnic backgroud, genes will determine what you look like. Excercise helps during weight loss. You can build muscle to help a little.

Today I have loose skin which I bear as marks of my "previous" life just like my stretch marks from pregancy. I am not ashamed of either. Yes, I wish I had neither but where I am today is so worth any minor imperfection.

Courage on this journey friends. Love my sleeve.

I started out my pregnancy back in 2007 at about 250lbs and was 268 right before surgery. I have a flabby pouch on my stomach that is shrinking but not as fast as I'd like. I'm also 40 so who knows if it'll ever be gone of if I'll have to resort to plastics to get rid of it. Hopefully insurance will pay when the time comes!

I'm still pre op, going next week. I'm very paranoid about this too though so I am making sure my skin is in top shape going in, and I have compiled a few things I did in the past when I lost around 50 lbs (half my goal) and had NO skin issues. My theory is that if I can get through half way without issues in the past, I might be able to have minimal issues at goal... Hopefully. ..I mean, my chest will probably still deflate and be horrible, but one plastic surgery I can do... not 4. So here are my ideas:

1. Water, lots of it. Hydration helps the skin immensely.

2. Firming lotion. I use either Nivea or Mary Kay's Target Zone. They both work amazingly well, and smell good. They are both equally expensive, but worth it. I put it everywhere after a shower, and on the trouble zones again at night.

3. Dry brushing. I brush my skin with a dry skin brush every night before bed and every morning before my shower. The idea is to brust with firm strokes from the feet up to the ribs, in circles on the stomach, and then from the hands in, all going toward the heart. I find it keeps my mild eczema at bay, and makes my skin feel like glass. It has helped some of the bumpiness on my thighs so far... but I haven;t started to lose so its hard to say if it's going to do much. It feels amazing though, and several people have said they had success with it.

So there it is, my crazy skin plan. LOL

i agree with everyone, but i will just stick with exercise and spandex n my olive oil Shea butter cream that i mixed.. and is working.. other than that if i have some skin left.. who ever God puts in my path (love, relationship wise) they are going to have to enjoy it, and love me for who i am. Later on when i have kids then i'll think about plastics.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
