My head is spinning :-) (kind long)

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My name is Alicia and I live in Stockton, CA. I have been researching WLS and the band seems like a great choice. I had back surgery (fusion) two years ago and the burden of my extra weight really has become an issue. I'm ready to loose it! I try to move pretty slow on life altering decisions but today has been a whirlwind! I just had to share it with someone other than the hubby :)

I called my insurance to get some basic info. (Big step for me.) I then called Dr. Feng (San Fransisco) to see if he took my insurance and to inquire about maybe getting a consult in the near future. (Trying to take baby steps ya know...:rolleyes) Well, his office said Dr Feng was at his satelitte office just 10 minutes from my home today and he could see me!! Two hours later I'm talking to the Doc and I came away knowing the band is what I want. Best of all, DR. Feng agreed it was my best option he'll be submitting the request to my insurance. It'll all happened so fast my head is still spinning! I'm thrilled though and figure it's in God's hands now.

In all my excitement I forgot to ask Dr. Feng about medication. Does anyone have problems dealing with pain or other meds after the band? Not necessarily getting them down but any bad reactions?

Anyway, thanks for listening. Please send prayers and good thoughts this way. Send 'em to my insurance company too please :clap2:

Alicia

congratulations and good luck Alicia, I live close to Modesto (howdy neighbor), meds are only a problem if the tablets are big and you have to take them in the morning, you might have to ask for liquid or if they can be broken up. i have problems taking my multi Vitamin, so i cut in half and have it with hot tea. after 11 am i'm less restricted and pills are no problem.

I think the only thing that could affect you really is medications that have a side effect of nausea, that didn't previously affect you, it might start making you nauseas, you know?

Also, you aren't supposed to take NSAIDS (asprin, ibuprofen, etc)... as they can be bad for your stomach.

I had to stop taking my arthritis meds, can't take any nsaids, ibuprofin, etc. I do still take Vicodin for pain and it is on the approved list after banding.

My doc had a mandatory class prior to banding at which we had a consultation with theiri pharmacist regarding meds we are taking. They tell you any that might be a problem. Most of mine I could crush or get in liquid form. I had to switch my antidepressant to a two pills of a smaller dose because the pills were littler...I just take them at the same time so I get the dose I need. They can work with almost anything other than the NSAIDs or nauseating meds. If your doctor doesn't work with a pharmacist, check with the pharmacist you use on your own.

Thanks for the input guys, it's just the info I was looking for.

I'm particularly glad to hear you are able to take Vicodin Ralheit,

it's my main source of pain relief!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
