Question About Goal Weight

Recommended Posts

I am female, 5'5" tall and want to know what a good goal weight should be for myself (realistic). The reason I am having a problem with figuring this out is because I am big boned. I know, I know, you haven't heard that before, but really I am. I'm like a puppy that never grew into the large feet and hands that I have. I wear a size 11 shoe and I can palm a basketball. I am the shortest person in my family. My dad is 6'3", my brother is 6'5", my mom is 5'8". Anyone out there my height or taller with the same problem that might have a rule of thumb they use or maybe hit goal? I go into surgery on Tuesday and would love some guidance on a goal to aim for.

My personal suggestion is to come up with a weight on the higher end of a healthy weight for you (BMI of 29) and then go from there. You will know more as you lose and what will be a comfortable weight for you, and you may find that you can lose more. That's my personal thoughts, talk to your doc about that too. He/She will be able to help more.

I'm your height and body build. Several years ago I got down to the mid 150's, and I was pretty thin (6/8/S on top, 8/10 bottom). Not sure where I will end up this time, but I'm shooting for150. Good luck!

Thanks. I just found a weight chart on line that had three columns, small frame, medium frame and large frame with some ranges in it. It looks like I should be in the 137-157 range so 150 sounds like a great goal. Thanks for your response. I haven't been 150 in 17 years. Fingers crossed I get there again.

hi jhansen - i am 5'3 , 58 yrs young - average build - started WLS at 235 - 12/15/11 going for 140lbs - 150 might be more realistic - in your case just a total guess may go for 155-160 since you are large boned - this is just an example to start with - others - please chime in. best kathy

I am 5'8" and believed my whole life that I was big-boned. I wear a size 10 shoe and a L glove. My initial goal weight was 150, but I lost a little more and now my wrist is smaller than 6" and I realize that I am small-boned! I have skinny fingers and my feet are narrow and not W.

I think you should aim for 140--I am at 138 and slender but by no means skinny.

The other ladies made good recommendations. Start with a number like 150 and see how things go from there. I will tell you that this sleeve ride is something else as long as you stick to the plan.

I am small boned and 5'5. My goal was 145 and I made it last month. I am currently 139 and I am just going to see what happens betwee now and my 1 yr in June.

My shoe size went from a 9 to a 8. Ring from 7 to 5.5 My whole body has shrunk!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
