OH NO! I've got a cold and my surgery is MONDAY!

Recommended Posts

I just started CPAP for severe sleep apnea, and now I have a very sore throat and stuffy nose. I can't figure out whether this is a CPAP side effect or a cold. My banding procedure is MONDAY morning (it's Friday evening). Will they still do the procedure?

Also -- I lost 6 pounds on the pre-op diet and got into a pair of shorts that didn't fit 2 weeks ago. YES!

Probably not, you need to be in full good health for the Operation

I would say call you Dr but its Friday night and then weekend so you have no choice...Drink your OJ :) I hope it passes before Monday! If not reschedule better safe and healthy than sick and miserable

Don't panic just yet Hon, it may be a side effect..it also may be allergies...or just something in the air, etc. Hold tight til tomorrow and see how you feel.

I, too, came down with a miserable cold just days before my surgery...I was terrified that I had wasted all that money on a very long plane ride, hotels, time off for DH etc, etc...only to find that I was better by morning. It was really wierd. I don't even have allergies, (mind you they say that allergies can come on at any time and can change every year) *shrugs* So who knows?

I truly hope that you aren't getting a cold. Try to rest up, and keep us posted!:)

Sending healthy thoughts your way,

Sunshine

Don't fear just yet. I too had a cold a few days befor my surgery. I was all conjested. My surgery went on as planned. It made sucking on that awful breathy thing a little tougher. Get lots of Vitamin C

Take that over the counter medicine for a cold. I can't remember the name and it's more expensive than the tylenol or any of that stuff, zicam or something. I would try everything, because even if you can get your date changed, there's the flights, time off and all of that.

Good luck and keep us informed.

When I first started using the CPAP I'd wake up dry and sneezing and felt like I had a cold. For me, it was b/c I didn't have a humidifier attachment to the CPAP, which has now made all the difference. So...it might be that you don't actually have a cold, but have a reaction to the dry air in the CPAP. Maybe use a little Vicks Vapo-Rub on your nose tonight and try sleeping with a humidifier?

Start taking Zycam! If it is a cold, it will help you get over it faster. If it's not a cold, it won't hurt anything. Maybe try taking Benadryl before bed to help with the stuffiness. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
