Pre Op Diet Confusion!

Recommended Posts

My pre-op dieat is confusing me!! My surgery is on 3/21 which means I am supposed to be on Day 4 of my 2 week pre-op. Thing is, I cheated horribly the first 3 days and I am ready to get back on track because I DON'T want to get re-scheduled, gain weight and I realize how serious this diet is to the being compliant after I am sleeved. The only thing is, I don't know how many carbs, sugars or grams of fat ar too much. The diet they gave me was confusing Meal Replacement shakes and bars, which I brought the minimal amount. I thought about just doing a straight up liquid diet, fat free, sugar free, no carbs. All of the Protein Shakes I have purchased have carbs and fat. What is the max I can do in carbs and fats and still be able to lose weight or at least maintain (and have liver shrinkage) ?

try doing an all liquid diet from here on out using otifast if you can get it. Some doctors say drink 3 a day and some say 5. I believe the 5 a day have 800 calories. I would not go over that. I hope this helps.

Are they filling? What flavors do you recommend?

You sound like me! I was going crazy over my Pre op. This is what I did. I maintained cals no more than 800/day. I kept carbs and sodium as low as possible. You still need carbs to an extent so if i had an high carb day, it was not over 30.

When I tried medifast, i really like the 5 and 1 where you have 5 replacements then a lean and green. I'll admit I cheated on my all liquid part and threw in the lean and green when i was about to loose my mind. I did this up until 3 days before then I went all liquid. I still managed to loose 10 and the surgeon didn't say anything about my liver being too big. Other than that I used EAS carbadvantage shakes, propel Water and tried to drink at least 12 cups a day.

Did they give you a specific amount to lose?

Thanks ladies!! They didn't specify to lose any paticular amount. I don't want to gain and I want liver shrinkage

Ok that's understandable.I hope you find the best way for you to get through. I read in the board that it doesn't take long for the liver to shrink, a week give or take. I also want to add this: the closer to all liquid you can stay the better. I'm realizing now that it really preps you for after surgery when you really CANNOT eat anything other than liquids :)

I'm on day 2 of my 2week pre-op diet. They have me on 2 shakes and a frozen meal of 400 cals or less. Thank god I'm diabetic so they added in a fruit or veggie snack...but I'm still so hungry lol!

I have a three week diet, all liquids day before surgery 3/20 I drink two shakes, one packet of Quaker Oats Weight Control oatmeal, 6 oz of low fat yogurt, sugar free Jello, 2 cups veggies, 3 oz of chicken/turkey/fish. I started week three on Tuesday and have lost 18 lbs as of today. I have had more protein/carbs three days on the diet but have been working out EVERYDAY. I'm gonna try to stick strictly to the plan here on out b/c I do not want to prolong my surgery or have any avoidable complications. I just hope those 18 lbs make a difference in my liver. Maybe this diet will offer you a little more during the day to make it easier for you to stick to.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
