Hey all, my insurance doesnt cover bariatric surgery so I started looking else where, i didn't want to travel to Mexico. I wanted to stay in the US. I found dr. morris washington. I have my surgery date set for september 12th.

Everyones questioning why its so cheap so i asked. Here was the reply:

Ok ....why it's so cheap. Our bariatric program here at Conway Medical Center with Dr. Washington is new. Our former bariatric surgeon left this area about 1.5 years ago. The hospital recruited Dr. Washington from his practice in NJ (Freehold I think). Our facility was previously a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery with the former surgeon. When he left, we lost that special accreditation (b/c we had no one to do the surgeries and you have to do so many in a certain time frame to keep it current). For our new program we are in the process of obtaining our new Center of Excellence. In order to be in compliance with this program however, you have to do 125 bariatric surgeries over a certain time frame. The hospital administration decided to discount the self pay price for the surgeries so that we could hopefully get to that number sooner rather than later as that is the only requirement of the excellence program that is not already in place.

I also asked is he board certified and here is the reply:

Dr. Washington is board certified and he is even a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. (extra training/certification) You can see all of his credentials, bio information, etc. on our website financing through chase advanced medical (i think thats what its called...not positive) and i was approved for 7000. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me. I'm very confident with my decision to choose Dr. Washington. (he's in south carolina by the way-and its a 12 day visit if your out of town).

Good luck!!!

Omg!!! My father in law had his surgery by him in freehold. He used to be in NYC and is one of the sleeve pioneers. You are really lucky to get him for this price!!!!!

I live about 4 hours away from Conway, SC, so I will be going to his office on April 9th for the consultation. I'm getting married to my best friend in May and have decided to trim the wedding down to close friends and family so that we will be able to use the extra money towards the surgery. I have heard great things about Dr. Washington and am so excited that I found him instead of going to Mexico for the price. Are the surgery dates all the way out to September? To say that I am excited is a complete understatement.

Hey Meredith! 1st congrats on getting married!!! It's wonderful having your best friend there beside you :-)

Ok... Have you spoken to his office about the price? You may already have set all that up but I did just hear that they are no longer doing it for 8000. Just might wanna double check :-)

I had my consult March 1st and set my surgery date that day which is April 25. It all happened fast for me. His nurse did tell me they were filling up fast but I HOPE things go fast for you too!!!

please keep us updated :-)

Congratulations on getting a great doctor at a great price! :)

I remember Conway, SC. I lived down that way back in the mid 90's. It's not far at all from Myrtle Beach. :)

I had surgery with Dr. Washington on October 18, 2011. He and his staff and the hospital staff were great! I have no regrets and had no complications. Look at my ticker for weight lost.

Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
