Surgery next Friday and have a question

Recommended Posts

I start my liquid diet today to prepare for surgery. My doctor

only required 1 week for me. I am so glad because I am nervous about

making it a week on Protein shakes and liquid. But I am hopeful that I

will lose a little weight before the surgery to give me a jump start.

My question is this:

If we are on liquids then mushy food for 3 or 4 weeks why dont people

lose more in the first month. Is it because they are eating to much

pudding and cream of wheat and mashed potatos or what? Especially

with the small amound we are taking in?

I have read that the first month is about healing and I totally get

that and am fine with it. I just don't understand the reason that we won't lose more???

After the swelling goes down from surgery you have no restriction. FOr some that can be 1 day and others it takes weeks. Each person is different. When you are on liquids they go right through the small stomach formed by the band and into the large stomach. You might feel some restriction with mushies as they may take longer to go down.

The goal is not to make the stomach work to digest the food and cause motion that may cause the stitches to pull. It is important that you follow your doctor's instructions.

During liquids and mushies we tend to eat higher caloric foods, like mashed potatoes, gravies, ice cream shakes, etc. that keep us from losing weight. However, I have noticed reading this board that many, many lose lots of weight during a pre surgery diet and immediately following surgery.

Good luck on your journey.

I lost 21 in the first 17 days so I guess I was losing more than a pound a day but then, when restriction has started getting less I'm automatically eating more, don't get my first fill until Tuesday and I'm only losing about 2 pounds a week right now and too I'm still healing so I'm not concentrating on losing it just happens.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
