Protein-- Ugh!

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm a week out from my surgery and I cannot tolerate any Protein.

Or rather I can't tolerate any Protein smoothies. They are so gross to me that I start gagging as soon as they come close to my face.

Pre surgery I found a few favourites, but now I hate them.

I tried a premade one today and I was able to get it down, but I didn't much like it, but I didn't gag.

But it has scary sweeteners in it.

I'm trying to avoid asparatame, splenda and the like.

I will do stevia, but not much.

I know that I have a pretty horrible list of wants here, but does anyone have any insight?

Also as of today I'm allowed yogurt, cottage cheese and the like, but that's not going to be enough to get me any amount of protein.

thanks!

Dea, A week out from surgery, you should be concentrating on liquids anyway. Do the best you can on the Protein, but make sure you're getting the Water you need into your body. I drank a lot of broth (chicken and beef) during my first few post-op weeks. It doesn't have a lot of Protein per serving, but it does help keep you hydrated, gives you a break from straight Water, and is NOT sweet. I couldnt stand sweets for the first 4.5 months post-op. I wish I still couldn't, actually.

Good luck! It WILL get better! :)

I used unflavored Protein in Decaf with a little milk and splenda (you could use stevia too). You could buy a small bag of it at GNC to see if you can tolerate it. There are lots of other ways to mix the unflavored - you can still taste the protein a bit, but I tolerated it much better than the sweet flavors.

Thanks everyone!

Lissa, I stopped trying so hard and focused on Water, it helped. I was just trying to follow what the nutritionist told me, so frustrating that there is such a swing of info!

I also got some Unjury chicken Protein Powder and mixed it with chicken broth and it's amazing! I am so grateful to have found that!

I'm 2 weeks out now and doing better! Not nearly getting 60 grams a day, but I am close to getting my water every day. A trick I found want to keep a bottle next to my bed and sip it every time one of the kids woke me up! Then I wake up in the morning 8-10 ounces ahead already!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
