Doing The Surgery Alone?

Recommended Posts

I have my band to sleeve revision scheduled for March 27th, but the person who was supposed to take me to and from the hospital and stay with me for a couple days after is no longer able to. My husband is deployed and I don't live near any family. Literally, I have no other options. Has anyone ever driven themselves home from the hospital after this surgery? I can drop my pets off at the sitter so I won't have to walk up and down stairs multiple times by myself and bend to feed them and such. I just honestly don't remember the recovery from my band all that much, and I had my husband home to help me. Am I getting myself into something absurdly stupid, if I plan to go this alone? I'll have a couple days in the hospital, so its not like I'll be going home the day after, but I'm just running out of options now. My other option is to cancel my surgery.

I went to Mexico alone for surgery and was able to drive myself home from the airport my 4th day post-op. I could take care of myself as well. I made sure that I had stocked the fridge beforehand and just took it easy the first 2 weeks. Most docs say you can drive if you aren't taking pain meds that will make you drowsy.

That make me a little more hopeful. After the band, I relied heavily on my husband, because I was scared to injure something. Now, I won't have a choice. I'm mainly worried about not being able to care for my animals, or having some sort of complication that would require me to go back to the hospital.

My hospital required me to be picked up. My husband stayed in the hospital with me so it was not an issue.

Maybe speak to a friend or if u go to church someone there.

Or how about reaching out to someone here by listing your city and maybe someone here that actually understands your needs lives by you and you can then also have someone to lean on?

Good luck!!! If u live by me in Cali I will come get you;-)

Thanks! Unfortunately, I'm in Texas. I may post something on here to look for some assistance. I hadn't thought of that.

Gosh, I wish I was closer to help. Do you by chance live in an apartment community where the management team there could help with your pets?

Lol, my management here are jerks! I'm likely going to take them to this fabulous sitter I have.

Or, the dog at least. The cat is no maintenance, and will be good for comfort after surgery.

Would a cab ride be reasonable? I would call a car service. It's very dangerous for you to be driving this soon after surgery. If you were in an accident, not only could you get hurt & the other guy.....but they could sue your pants off for being so negligent.

Hey, I'm sorry to be such a Debbie Downer in my last post. ( : Just wanted to say, I was going to be by myself, too, when I came home from the hospital. I have two daughters to check in w me. Then a few days before surgery my 20 yr. old granddaughter offered to stay w me. I was sooooo glad she did....just for the company. She'd go to work and school, but I looked forward to her staying at night. Plus, she'd pick up stuff for me....like RX's, Soup and more Water. I think your cat will be great company for you. So just make sure you have all the groceries you need ahead of time. Best wishes!

i have plenty of family and friends that could stayed with me, but i was fine by myself in the hospital, so i made them leave and i'm glad i did because it is so much easier to concentrate just on you and sleeping and stuff in the hospital, plus there is a bunch of nurces, so no need for extra people.

on the driving i'll say is better if you just get a taxy or something like that, i couldn't focus my mind for the first week i think.

go and get everything you need and put it in an easy place reach adn you will be fine by your self, just make sure you don't forget a thing

i think it is very doable!

good luck ;)

Yeah, a taxi is definitely do-able, but I was thinking more of my control issues! Haha! I hate relying on people and prefer to do things myself. But, safety first. I'm trying to think back to my band surgery, and I could have driven, probably, but I didn't try for weeks, since my husband was on leave.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
