Hard Time In The Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery on 3/13 but I'm having a difficult time with the pre op liquid diet. I'm so hungry. Physically I feel hunger pains and it's getting harder to ignore. How long were some of your pre op diets? My BMI is a 47 and I was told 7-day liquids.< /p>

I was on a "lean and green" diet for two weeks prior to my surgery. I had to drink five shakes a day And at dinner time I could have half a cup of salad and a small piece of meat. That itself wa very hard to go from eating whenever I wanted to not eating really anything. But the one thing I noticed was that the first few days were horrible, but once you get past a few days it gets a lot easier! You won't even think about eating or being hungry. If you having issues with hunger you could switch up shakes if the dr says its ok. Sometimes switching things up helps!

I do know how you feel as I am on day 7 of a 19 day liquid diet. We are not allowed Protein Drinks other than plain milk. I had been doing great but today has been awful. But, we will get through this and afterwards we will look back and think...it wasn't that bad. (I hope) Keep on keeping on. B)

My doc/nut told me the purpose of the pre-op was to shrink the liver to get it out of the way during surgery. To do that, the pre-op diet is suppose to put your system in to ketosis. this means no carbs.

For me, the first two days were the worst but I exercised (swimming laps) to put my system in to ketosis faster, once in ketosis, the hunger, fatigue and head ache went away. head hunger stuck around. Oh, drink lots of Water too.

the pre-op is one of the worst part's of the entire experince but hang in there.

My surgery is march 13 as well. I started the liquid diet yesterday! UGGGG this is seriously one of the hardest things I've been through. It's comforting to know that others are struggling just as much as me. HANG IN THERE! From what I hear it will be so worth it! I'm cheering for you!!!!

I tried the hot chocolate today, it was awesome! I bought some Soup from the grocery store, a roasted red pepper and Tomato Soup with low cal/low carb, it was pretty good. I also bought some Jello and popsicles even thought my sons will probablly eat the majority of those! Only a little while longer.

My surgery was March 1st: below is an excerpt from my pre-op instructions.

You will need to be on a liquid ONLY diet. You may have broth (chicken, beef or vegetable), sugar-free Jell-O, sugar-free ice pops, sugar free juice, Clear liquids (i.e. Crystal Lite, Diet Snapple, water), coffee or tea with a sugar substitute, and Protein powder mixed with Water. The key to the liquid diet is LOW sugar and LOW carbs. NO SOLIDS of any kind. Please also be sure to begin getting as much exercise as much as possible. Just walking 30 minutes a day 5 - 7 days a week is sufficient. This will aid in your recovery and lesson complication risks. This is the recommended pre-op diet for those with a BMI of 40 or below.

Yeah, everything I'm on is liquid only. The red pepper Soup is liquid only. I just hate Healthwise products! I only have a little while longer before my surgery. And my doc has his pts on clears for 2 weeks, full liquids for 2-3 weeks, and pureed for 3 weeks. I'm just trying to deal with the thought of wanting different food so bad right now! I'm hoping post sleeve will be better, my stomach is growling so loud when I'm with my patients in the exam room it's embarrassing!

There is a Soup I make (it's African) that I used to replace chicken broth, which I find is just so bland.

Two chops up onions, Tomato puree (enough to make the color of the broth to your liking - I prefer it red), 2-3 bay leaves, some black pepper, some salt (to taste), some seasoned salt, lots of thyme, scotch bonnet peppers (I like pepper though, so you can skip this); a spoon or two of sugar; chicken legs/thighs/wings/oxtail/beef (clearly you would not be consuming these after the soup is done - you can freeze them for when you can actually eat them); pop all items in a pressure cooker and cook under medium heat for about 30 to 45 mins depending on the number of creature you have in it; and Bob's your uncle! Sorry...forgive the British slang there lol!

When you can do soft foods you can include potatoes and carrots before your pressurize...very yum!!

Ok... I am having a terrible time. I have even cheated. And I feel terrible about it. I just keep getting so hungry. Hungier than I've ever felt in my life. I get terrible headaches, I get sick to my stomach, shaky. And everything I can eat is cold. After eating cold foods/liquids all day, all I can think about is something warm and comforting. I'm so embarrassed. :(

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
