I Think I'm Eating Too Much

Recommended Posts

I am a little over one month out from surgery and I feel like I don't have restriction with my sleeve maybe it is in my head but I feel like I can eat a lot or what I deem as a lot at once. If I were to measure I would say it's rough 1 cup of food I can eat during a meal. I spoke with a co-worker and she told me I was doing wrong and needed to be eating 1/4 cup of food during a meal. I went through my weight loss manual again and didn't read anywhere where it say how much I could fit in my sleeve at once. I'm nervous that I might stretch my new stomach out over time. Can someone help and let me know how much I am suppose to eat if I were to measure in cups. Thanks for any help in advance. God Bless!

I was instructed to MEASURE 4 T of food (1/4 cup) for each meal. I have found that's about my limit anyway, although I can definitely eat closer to a cup of Soup if it's mostly broth. I think that you should definitely start measuring out your food at 1/4 cup and see how you do with that. The other nice thing about measuring is that there's no guilt or worry over eating everything on your plate!

I'm five weeks out and find I have good and bad days. Most of my meals are about 1/2 cup, or close to 2 oz. But I can sit down and eat close to a cup or 4oz if I want to. My doctor says not to ever put more than 4oz on my plate, but never said I can't have more. I try to do it to be conscientious of not stretching or pushing my sleeve into uncomfortable places.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you have to!

Thank you all so much for your responses. I had a feel I wasn't doing right happy I had a chance and could ask that question. I don't feel discomfort if I eat more than 4oz. that what made me ask this question.Again thank you all!!

I don't measure at all...I "listen" for full cues and go from there, some days its more, some days its less.

Our docs told us at our last support group meeting that it would take a long period of time (implying years) of habitual over eating to stretch our stomachs...

your body is probably the best judge of your portion size, its just a matter of learning your new cues.

At one month out I was allowed to eat 2 oz at a time - typically 1 oz Protein and 1 oz either veg or starch. I couldn't imagine eating a cup of food at that point post-surgery . . . but it depends on what you're eating. I'm sure I could have eaten a cup of Soup or other "slider" foods, for example. But certainly not a cup of any dense Proteins.< /p>

Wow, I can eat quite a bit more easily. This always worries me. The weight is coming off though, slowly.

I don't drink with meals, I eat slowly. Tonight I had about 3 oz steak, 1 egg, a little less than 2 oz of cottage cheese and one slice of bread. Shouldn't have had the bread, but its still way less than I used to eat, but way way more than 2 oz. i wasn't given any guidance like that. Most of my meal examples I was given for the solid food stage were 4-6 oz of total food. I really am not sure. I am just full, not overly stuffed, from that meal. I didn't even get hiccups, which is what happens if I eat one bite too many.

I never measure, I just eat slowly and "listen" to what my body tells me, everyone is different, what works for some doesn't always work for everyone, don't think you are wrong cos someone else does it one way, you will find what works for you, can be frustrating, you have lightbulb moments, you have down days, and you have amazing days, take each day at a time :)

It depends on what you're eating. 4 oz of chicken breast is going to feel completely different than 4 oz of yogurt.

So long as you're eating within your own nutritional guidelines I don't see what the problem is here. We're all different and our surgeons are all different, too. And it does depend 100% on what you're eating. I can eat 2-3 cups of popcorn, but it slides right through. I can eat one egg scrambled with cheese and I'm stuffed. So if it's a cup total of something soft, that's not unheard of or abnormal and I don't think you're in real danger of stretching your sleeve out, either. Sit down to a portion of chicken or tuna and tell me how much you can eat. If you say a cup of that, I'll be amazed.

And LoserMama, the weight will likely come off more slowly than if you restricted yourself to 500 calories a day, sure, but it's not like eating such a small amount is actually healthy for you in the long run, anyway. In fact, I'd say I'm actually envious of your capacity, because eating what you need to eat to be healthy person is going to be much easier for you.

The same thing goes for all of us - if we eat the right things we're going to see a drop on the scale. And honestly, we're comparing ounces here when most of us consumed pounds of food at a time prior to surgery. If you're not feeling discomfort or pain and not having an issue or failing to lose weight, there isn't a problem.

I was told to keep my meals to 4 oz. 2 oz of Protein and 2 oz of veggies or fruit. I definitely think I can eat more with the slider foods (yogurt, applesauce...)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
