Swollen Stomach 1 Week Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am one week post op and have noticed some swelling in my stomach. I'm going to be calling the surgeon in the morning, but has anyone encountered this? It's not painful, just uncomfortable. Is it normal? Will it go down on it's own? Could it get infected? Any idea as to what it is?

Thanks!

Katie

My stomach was swollen for the first month after surgery. I think that it is normal as you have just had major surgery. Checking with your doctor is great but I would guess that it is from your surgery. Are you having any drainage, fever, nausea or diarrhea? If you are having any of those then you may have a problem.

My surgeon has me coming in at 2 weeks for a checkup. I would be better with this if it just didn't appear over the past two days, but had been there for the whole time. It feels like Fluid and it's getting more uncomfortable. No fever, no symptoms. So at least I know I don't have an infection! Thanks everyone!

It would be a good ideal to call your surgeon's office and describe you swelling to the doc or PA. Yes, our stomachs are swollen right after surgery due to having 85% removed. They stapled and cut and sewen over the stapleline. But I never could visually see the stomach being swollen. I felt it when eating and drinking.

CONGRATS! Welcome the the BIG LOSER'S CLUB! ;)

K8SGR8-

While a swollen tummy is par for the course post-op, I agree that it is concerning that you've had significantly increased swelling in the last two days. Definitely give your surgeon a call. Best wishes!

I called today and they said to keep compresses on it. I don't have staples or sutures. They glued my tiny incisions back together :) They said it could be gas or fluids and to see how the day progresses :)

The staples and sutures are internal ;-) It's now they closed your stomach when they removed 80-85% of it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
