Started Pre Op Diet & Can't Stop Thinking About (And Eating) Food

Recommended Posts

I started my 3 week pre op diet today. Its supposed to be 2-3 Protein Shakes per day and a piece of Protein and lettuce salad for supper. I've already cheated! I can't stop thinking about food. To make matters worse I also stopped smoking today. I've been on Chantix for about 2 weeks. So now I want to eat and smoke. Any ideas to get food/smoking off my mind?

Its hell for the first few days, you just have to push through it...once you do that you will be fine. You will get to the point where you will look forward to your protien and lettuce salad and it will become the best thing EVER. LOL I have 2 days to go and I still feel tortured, BUT its gotta be worth the 7 pounds I have lost, right?

Hey Optima! My surgery is on friday - and today i started my 3 day pre op "clear' liquid diet and I am a wreck!! I'm starving and feel weak (I'm such a baby!!!!).... I also stopped smoking about a week ago and just started on the "electronic' cigarette... it's only menthol, but hey it keeps me from smoking!

It's funny, I'm trying to keep from being depressed because I've giving up two things that I LOVE!! food and cigarettes.. good grief I have issues! So, I wish I could help you - all I can say is that I'm right there with you.. struggling, but we both know that it will be worth it... hang in there dear! we'll get through this together. Keep coming back to the boards - there's so much emotional support here!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
