This is a wonderful site and I am glad that I found it. I have battled my weight since 5th grade. I lost weight and was in great shape in my twenty's. I ran five miles a day ate a very healthy diet and felt great. Then i started post graduate training and worked 60-80 hours a week day and night. Th running left and the weight came back with a vengeance. Now I am 43 years old and overweight. I lost weight 50-60 pounds last year when I was considering the gastric sleeve and tried weight loss one more time. The old habits crept back and the weight returned. I have decided to have surgery in april and have a date set. I used to go out for dinner with the guys I am friends with and one of the guys is a bariatric surgeon. I guess GOD had this planned for me for awhile now. I have a sick wife and I worry that I have to be healthy or risk my son being an orphan. I feel a bit anxious but am committed to my decision.I have a tentative date set for mid april.

hey disney

welcome aboard to the train of success WOO WWOO

Glad your joining us - we all are great LOL

As far as being overweight since the 5th grade, well i think we've all been there and back. Also lost weight only to gain it back, and just not able to keep it off.

My DH and I always went out to dinner, whether it was my b'day or the 2nd day of the month starting w/a J - or my DH aunts cousin once removed, her friend - or of course the very important Ground Hogs Day. Whatever! By the way, we really are seriously saving alot of money. No kidding

you will show to your son that eating wisely is the way to go, while i hope your DW starts to feel better.

Although April sounds far away, it will be here before you know it. Keep reading this board to get a lot of good information for your upcoming VSG. Ask plenty of questions too.

Good Luck

Kathy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
