New Feb Sleevers Any Regrets? Best And Worst Thing So Far

Recommended Posts

My sleeve date was this past Wed. and just bored and wondering how everyone is doing? I don't have any regrets but am counting down the days till I feel better. Every day its a new struggle. The worst had been the pain when drinking. The gas pains seem to have gone for now. So far the best part is I have yet to vomit and being a single mom its nice having my mom stay with me to take care of things.

OMG! I just vomited for the first time since my sleeve. It was awful. I guess I ate to much or to fast or both. I had about 2 oz of salmon which went down fine. Then I had some cauliflower. I guess I ate to much cauliflower or maybe it wasn't cooked quite enough. I was burping, hiccuping and had a pain in my chest. I finally threw up. I'm 3 weeks out and it hurt like he%$. It felt like something was ripping in my lower left side.

I had been doing fine. No problems whatsoever then this. I will eat much more slowly and carefully from now on. I hope I didn't do any damage.

I am starting to think that I really AM going to be the one person who the VSG doesn't work for. I lost just a pound or so this past week. Then I slap myself and shout at me "You fool! Of COURSE you are going to lose weight!" And then I think my yelling self is right, but then a half hour later I don't believe me again.

I think I am losing my mind. Also, my fuse is waaaay short.

OMG! Be careful with yourself! Do not eat gassy veggies (i.e. cauliflower, broccoli) until months from now. I couldn't even keep Water down in the hospital (had to stay an extra night) but since then I have been fine. I did almost lose it though when I ate a poached egg for Breakfast. I had no idea eggs were so hard to digest.

Thanks. They didn't tell me to stay away from gassy veggies. They just said soft veggies where ok. Ugh. I'll be more careful.

I'll stick to liquids for the rest of the day.

I've heard that this doubt phase is normal

So far no regrets. I had horrible acid reflux and heartburn the first 2 weeks but since taking prilosec and antacid tablets I have not had any problems. I only threw up once after eating eggs and cottage cheese. Haven't eaten eggs since then! That is so far the only really unpleasant thing I've had. I have been really lucky in that drinking fluids has been easy for me. I have been drinking more than the recommended amount.

I appreciate this post/string as I too (like Spatters3) have been thinking the past few days "I'm going to be the 1 person the VSG doesn't work for!!" And have been pretty frustrated because I am following my Dr's. diet plan to the 'T'. Have since the week prior to surgery (2/13). So it dawned on me this a.m. "is this the 3 week stall I've heard about?" At first I thought it was just because it was that time of month, so I figured I wouldn't lose any then. But seriously!!! When you're only having maybe 400 calories a day, and it's all good stuff, and you're drinking Water, walking, Protein, Vitamins, etc.........if feels like this WEIGHT SHOULD BE COMING OFF FASTER!!

I know...I know... Patience Mary. I am thankful for what I've lost so far (20 #) but I must admit, this past week I haven't lost but .5 pound and it can get to you when you're watching everyone else eat all this delicious stuff you're used to but can't have now and yet still not losing. Maybe I'm gaining by osmosis....watching others eat the good stuff. Yes I know I've got to snap out of this mental funk!! :-) Crossing my fingers if I just 'stay the course' it'll start melting off soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best thing so far: having control over my urge to overeat. u just can't. it's as simple as that.

Worst thing so far: not really anything, unless my weak self says 'smelling the popcorn and brownies I can't have.' Note to self: MUST REMEMBER THE END GOAL. MUST REMEMBER THE END GOAL. MUST REMEMBER THE END GOAL.

Also - my fuse is wayyy short too. Must be a hormonal thing about this stretch of the journey?

I am 12 days post-op, and I think I have gone through every emotion humanly possible in the past 12 days... I know its all 'normal' stuff. I keep telling myself that a runner cannot have knee surgery and run a marathon the next day. I just want to be healed, past the liquids, past the mushies, I just want to know what my new normal life will be...? I want to be able to get my 64 oz of liquid in. The most I've done so far is about 45. I am stuffed, and scared of dehydration... I am not hungry at all, but I want to CHEW! Starting Monday my diet allows mushy food, soft cheese, soft meats, cooked veggies. I hope it helps... I have read on here that 'it gets better in time', and if I work on it the weight loss is coming. Right?! :)

Don't regret it, can't wait to eat at 4 weeks. My incisions are sore and some gas pain, but overall I am doing fine, fluids going down good. I am sipping on Soup and drinking Isopure protien drink, goes down without burning. Can't wait to eat soft foods too. After my 2 week appointment I will be or pureed foods for one wee, and then soft foods next week. After that. The weight is coming off, but I don't suggest getting on the scale if you just had surgery.

I know what you mean, Sabrina, about wanting to chew. Last night I got the Zuppa Toscana Soup from Olive Garden and blended it, but they gave me 2 breadsticks with it - omg the smell was amazing. I got weak and I did have 2 bites of the bread, but I chewed it up until it was pulverized before I swallowed. I can't wait to at least go on soft foods so I can chew.

Please keep posting for this sleeve hopefuls reading and encouragement. I have my surgical consult on 3/12/2012 and hope that I have been accepted into the program by 3/19/2012. I am "underweight" for the sleeve my BMI is 38.3 not the required 40 and haven't gotten the results of my sleep study yet. I have been using the Protein in hopes I will add the needed 1.7 BMI before my appointment.

Hi Mary, I'm just about in the same spot you are. My surgery was the 15th, lost about 20lbs, had my period on the 28th and haven't lost any since. I am not worried because somewhere I read when we have our periods we don't lose any for a lil bit. Not sure how long either. My issues right now are to get all my liquids and Proteins in (which somedays seem to be difficult and other days not), eating and drinking too fast, and feeling pretty tired and low energy (even with liquids and Proteins in). Are you feeling blah too?

I was sleeved on 2/8. My loss has been about 25 pounds. I lost a huge chunk the first 1.5 weeks, then none for over a week. We do have a stall somewhere around 2-4 weeks. The emotions, etc is very common, not only with the HUGE change we are going through, but also from a big influx of estrogen that happens when you have quick wt loss- in women it is stored in abdominal fat. I too, am still on liquids, and can't wait to CHEW some food! But each day it gets easier and feels like I am settling more into my new life. I am getting in my liquids fine, but having a hard time getting in exercise....

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
