Opinions Needed... To Give In To Cravings Or Not?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I am 5 1/2 months post op and am going to the states in April... Still a couple months away, but I know I will not be in maintenance yet.

Here is my point. Every time I have been to the states I have always gone to Sonic and enjoyed the strawberry Creamslush, and lets be honest used to always get large. In Canada we do not have Sonic, so not like I can get it frequently.

I looked up the nutrition on it and it has around 440 calories for a small, and a lot of carbs. That is more then half my daily intake of calories right now. I will not lie, I want one, however I do have the willpower now to say no. What I am curious is if you think I should give in on the trip and let myself have a small as a treat or do you think it would open up pandoras box?

Honestly just looking for opinions do not be afraid to express yours at all!

My opinion: Vacation is the perfect time to enjoy treats I don't have at home. It sets a good boundary for me. Sometimes I don't eat the whole thing, but I enjoy the bites I have. I do have foods I really have to watch because I just will eat way too much of them, but if I'm out, it's generally only available in a set amount and I am able to stop there and not eat it till the package is gone like I might do at home.

Do it! I am so not the self deprivation sort. It's not like you're getting one every night on your way home from work. It's a rare and special treat for you- ENJOY!!

I agree w/ bedhead! Go for it! You probably won't even be able to drink it all anyway. I get a small coffee almost every day with half & half in it & can't even drink half of it although I'm only a month out...but I used to chug down an extra large daily :)

I agree with the other posters - allow yourself the treat if you are craving it. You'll be very surprised when you can't (or won't want to) finish even a small. I'm that way about Starbucks lattes - I used to get a regular venti mocha with whipped cream and guzzle it down; now I get a tall, nonfat, no whip and usually can't even drink half of it.

I was on a cruise for a week with a soft-serve ice cream bar open nearly 24/7 and didn't have that first cone (just a few licks here & there from my daughter's cones satisfied me more than enough). Any Desserts ordered at our table I was happy with just a bite or two. I tried lots of "bad" foods during meals but limited myself to just a taste of them.

I typically give in to cravings, I can't a lot anyway, so yeah.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
