Since my surgery I have had a really bad taste in my mouth and feel like my breath is just as bad. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? What can I do?

Is it coming from the back of your throat? You could have a sinus infection, or nodes or something - gargle with a non alcohol mouth rinse - really gargle - kick you neck back and open your throat...you might kick some nodes out.

A "node" that I refer to is a collection of throat plaque that gets caught in tiny folds in the back of your throat and back cheeks and can cause very bad breath. You will know if you get one because it will be firm, vary in size, migh break up but it will smell FOUL! I got them for awhile after an accident cause me to have plastic surgery to my cheek through the inside of my mouth, but mine stopped - and I go in every 6 months and they check it all out again...

Right after any surgery, it is always good to get a Hubby or someone to "check your breath". Foul odors and where they originate and how they smell have been classic diagnostic tools for thousands of years.

It most likely from the mild ketosis you are probably in since surgery due to low calories, burning fat, and the low amount of carbs you are eating. Just drink ALOT of Water and gargle and brush. Be glad ur fat burning Machine is kicking in!!!

Pookey,

Thanks for this information. My son is not going through any type of surgery but he's been having some serious bad breath. They prescribed him some decongestants as he does have some yellow drainage going down the back of his throat. If the pills and gargeling with salt Water doesn't work I'm gonna have him start searching for those nodes. I actually recall having them when I was his age.

I agree this is the likely cause. I have had the same off and on since surgery and in the past with low carb diets and it does get better when I drink more Water. If it gets worse or unbearable, certainly something to ask your doctor about. Extremely bad breath can be a symptom of many things.

My hubby informed me my breath has been really bad lately :( I guess its just a side affect of losing weight. I just keep mouth spray with me all the time now.

After surgery I had THE WORST ketosis breath, and I still have it.. Drinking lots of fluids does help it to be less lethal, but man it still is bad. Does anyone know how long they were in ketosis for?

Ketosis is as long as your eating very low carbs. ;)

For me it was ketosis as well. I'd brush my teeth vigorously and wash my mouth out with mouthwash and the bad taste and breath would come back within the hour! Went to the dentist during this time for a checkup and apologized for it. It got so bad sometimes I just wanted to retch. As soon as I introduced a more variety of food, it went away. It probably lasted me for two to three weeks.
