Pre Surgery Question...

Recommended Posts

I had my presurgery appt last week and was told that I only have to do a one day liquid diet the day before surgery, they dont use a catheder, they don't do a leak test and they try to get you home on the same day. I'm having surgery in Oregon, covered by insurance...has anyone else experienced this plan?

Hi,congrats on your decision to be sleeved! You will love it! =) I did not have this same plan. I had a 2 week pre-op diet,(but I have heard of alot of ppl not having to have a pre-op diet at all),I did have a catheter but they took it out before the anesthesia wore off and they did not do a leak test on me,but I stayed 2 days.

Only had 2 day liquid diet, and no leak test. Stayed 2 days because I was the last surgery of the day and because of a hernia repair did not get to my room until midnight. Dr. will see how you are doing and might keep you an extra day. Don't know about a catheter and sometimes ignorance is bliss. Blessings to you as you begin this journey. Thankfully I never have to go back.

I would check with your insurance and see how many days they pay for. It sounds like that is the situation. The insurance companies dictate your care, it is not right but they do. It is my opinion but I think you need at least one probably two nights in the hospital. I also believe in leak tests. As much as we would like to believe it is not, this IS major surgery on a MAJOR organ. Have you found out how many of sleeves ( not just WLS) your surgeon has performed? What is his complication rate? How many end up in the ER the next few days following surgery since there is no hospital stay or leak test? A leak will cause an infection, an infection will cause your tempature to rise. I monitored mine for a month after surgery.

This post is not to scare you but to make you aware of some questions to ask. All surgeons are different, some do not think you need a hospital stay. I would insist on being monitored for at least one night.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
