Respond Soon If Possible-Dehydrated-When Is It Time....

Recommended Posts

to go to the hospital? I got to work this morning and almost passed out a few different times. A coworker walked me down to the nurse's station where she tested my blood sugar (78 normal/low), blood pressure and pulse sitting then standing up (which resulted in a blood pressure drop and a minor pulse increase) and a slightly elevated temp (99.2-but I am usually a 97ish temp.) She thinkgs it was that I haven't had enough to eat and am dehydrated. I'm not asking for medical advice, I'm just not sure at what point I need to go and get fluids via IV at the hospital. I'm really tired too......sorry to sound like a pain. I'm not deathly ill and my color is okay...just woozy.

Immediately. Dehydration can be deadly. It throws all of your electrolytes out of balance and can permanently damage your heart and kidneys. Do not wait!

Most people are a little dehydrated all the time. That Tylenol you take to help with your low grade headache? Probably the glass of Water you took it with helped as much as the Tylenol. But what you're experiencing definitely puts you into the "get it taken care of" category. You can always call your surgeon if you're hesitatnt to go for any reason. The light-headedness could be a lot of things - a good friend of mine is an ER physician and she makes me hyper aware of little things, even still I'm not sure I would have thought "dehydration" at light-headedness so much as blood sugar... but combined with a low grade fever just don't even mess around with it. Are you peeing apple juice yet? :)

See what you think. Anything from the first list other than third, dry skin, and dark urine would probably be my indicator to at least call my surgeon's office and ask if my symptoms warranted a visit. Anything from list 2 , I'd better be calling from the ER where I'm already getting treatment. Anything from 3, there's just no excuse.

Mild dehydration:

  • Thirst
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Dry Skin
  • Skin Flushing
  • Dark Colored Urine
  • Dry Mouth
  • fatigue or Weakness
  • Chills
  • Head Rushes

Moderate dehydration:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased respiration
  • Decreased sweating
  • Decreased urination
  • Increased body temperature
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Muscle cramps
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Tingling of the limbs

Severe dehydration:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Vomiting
  • Racing pulse
  • Shriveled skin
  • Dim vision
  • Painful urination
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Seizures
  • Chest and Abdominal pain
  • unconsciousness

I talked with my doc's nurse and she said to go to the ER and get checked out. So I'm going (same hospital my doc works in) so we'll see. He will probably pop in too to make sure I'm alright (his orders to the hospital are if any of his patients come in, he's to be notified.) thanks everyone. Just needed the backing that I'm not overreacting. Better safe than sorry. My coworker is also an EMT and she suggested I go too....so...I'm on my way (well my husband is on his way to pick me up and take me cause I am to lightheaded to drive.) Thanks! I'll keep you posted.

I'm glad you are going to get checked on, from what everyone says dehydration is a HUGE thing. It's not something I would mess around with at all. Good Luck hun, hope all turns out well.

Yeah, dehydration is nothing to mess around with. It can turn ugly in a short amount of time. Going to the ER now could be the difference between a few bags of IV fluids and being sent on your way and a week long stay in the hospital with IV's and a feeding tube.

I got dehydrated after week 1 and an IV saved my life. I hope you can get some fluids and feel better soon.

update-I went to the hospital and they hooked me up to some fluids but I had been drinking so I think it wasn't as bad by the time I got there. They did some tests and everything seemed okay. I basically just hit a wall and my body was exhausted and dehydrated. Ugh...how long is this going to take to get back up to normal speed!

i am so glad u r ok, i am sure it will pass and soon, any surgery takes time for your body to adjust, so hang in there, and take it easy rest.

I would say you should be fine after the fluids. I was having similar symptoms before I went to the ER for fluids but once I got out it was easier to drink, eat, and generally just easier to function overall.

Hang in there girly! I've noticed that when my beverages are half frozen they're way easier to drink and it's easier to get my fluids in. Keep us posted!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
