Swollen Vein from IV

Recommended Posts

This is not a complication per se, but more of annoying side effect...

I'm hoping maybe I'm not the only one out there with this issue...?

I'm 4 weeks out of surgery and my hand and wrist that had the IV in it have been very sore since surgery. I even went to the doctor 2 days post op to check for a blood clot because my entire arm still hurt, it was sort of numb in spots and my wrist was noticeably swollen.

The Dr. said no blood clot, it's just an irritation from the anesthetic.

Fair enough.

Well it's nearly a month since that IV was in and my vein on that wrist is still huge and ugly (like a body builder, you know how they puff out and are really prominent) and it still hurts quite a bit to touch my hand or wrist anywhere.

I mean a month later and STILL swollen and painful?! yuck

I don't have a Dr. to go see. the nearest one is 5 hours away, so I won't be going for amother week or so...but I was just curious if this has happened to anyone else...?

I had an IV "infiltrate" when I was 16 and my vein is still popped up.... sorry .....but if it is hard or warm that's different....lots of warm compresses help and elevate it!!! Hang in there!!

God Bless,

Hmm... that much swelling, vein protrusion, and pain might just be phlebitis (inflammation)/thrombophlebitis (inflammation b/c of a blood clot).

I've had suerficial thrombophlebitis a few times. Not in a long time, but for a while I had them frequently enough that I could call my doc and tell him what was wrong. Here's what I looked for.

- Extremely painful to even the lightest touch. I men seriousl - blowing on it will hurt.

- Skin above and around is very hot to the touch (I would hover my hand over it and could feel the heat radiating from my skin)

- After a few days could usually see where the clot was, in the form of a red/dark "worm" visible under the skin.

- Did I say extremely painful?

- I mean extremely painful!

I know from the times I had them and what my doc would tell me that 2 weeks is about the longest to know if you'll develop it or not. E.g. the trauma happens day 1, and if you're going to get a clot it should be apparent by day 14. So in that sense it definitely doesn't sound like a clot.

So take that for what it's worth. If you're having significant pain/swelling/vein deformation, go see someone. The nearest doc is 5 hours away? Do you have an urgent care clinic or ER you can visit? If it is something more significant than "irritation", you don't want to mess around.

In the meantime, moist heat and tylenol or something stronger for pain is what was recommended for mine. Definitely if you notice a red swollen vein going all the way up your arm you need to have it noted by your doctor.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
