hey all-

So I have been only on the site for a short amount of time. You all are an inspiration to me and lots of other people. I have not had surgery yet however started the motions for the insurance. I hope to be sleeved late may early June. I have been toting with the surgery, Do I need it? Can I do it on my own? All questions I'm sure everyone has asked themselves. Of course I need it I have 140lbs to lose. I Am an extremely motivated person and work really hard once I make goals but this goal is just at of my reach. So with starting my pre-op 3 month nutrition visits! I have been working my butt off to try to get my weightless going. It's been the same struggle I have always had. My revelation came this morning when I stepped on the scale and gained weight after eating amazing everyday/ all day but last night I was hungry at 8pm and had some pineapple. Yes, it was late to eat but I didn't have a hot fudge Sunday, I had pineapple! When I saw the scale go up this am, that was it, surgery is for me! All my doubt and questions if I should go through with it are over. Now I want it to be next months and not 3-4 months away. Thanks for all your stories and motivating words!!!

I was a bit anti-surgery before my family and I attended the information seminar. I thought that the mortality rate for bariatric patients was sky high, but I was incorrect - actually, my surgeon went over the statistics and numbers - and as it turns out if I sat in the chair and did nothing at the BMI I was at, my mortality chance was a whole lot higher than if I had surgery.

He also discussed the statistics regarding weight loss and keeping it off - which as we all know with traditional diet and exercise programs the percentage of successful losses of all of ones excess body weight are very small - like 1% of the population, whereas with bariatrics it has exponentially higher success rates.

I have done everything and have not had the success I have always sought so I am looking forward to having the tool of a sleeve to increase my own odds of success :)

I think everyone has that AHA moment! Just be aware that we also have a later stage that happens right around the time we're going to have surgery where we second-guess ourselves and think "Wow! Why can't I just try (diet, exercise, voodoo rituals) and do it on my own?"

One of the most helpful analogies I have found comes from Dr Oz. He says that being 100 pounds overweight is like having a terminal cancer. You'd operate on the cancer, for sure, so why wouldn't you operate for the weight?

Thank you for sharing this! I met with my surgeon today and on the drive home I was thinking how ridiculous it is that I cannot just lose this weight. My issue is, I can lose the weight, at least some of it, but cannot keep it off. Seeing your Dr. Oz quote helps justify my decision!

Love this thread! I'm seeing my surgeon on Thursday and I've been trying to eat like I should, managing to lose 10 pound in the past 3 weeks. Then that little voice speaks up and says "Save your $20,000! You're smart! You can do this!" But if I look at my history, I know I can lose it but it always finds me again.

I love hearing that other people have the nagging little voice, too. Maybe that voice resides in the part of our stomach that will be removed?!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
