southerngirl 51 Posted February 27, 2012 Was just wondering about taking pills after surgery or will I have to crush them up for a while?
Thomas CPA 496 Posted February 27, 2012 nothing is changed as far as swallowing. Only nice thing about get some of them chewable early on is if you take the full regiment it can feel like a lead weight in the tummy. Just spread them out but if you can take whole now you can take whole after.
Foxbins 625 Posted February 27, 2012 How big are the pills? Immediately after surgery I could take my thyroid med, but it is a tiny cylinder. You will not be able to take anything the size of a Multi-Vitamin for a while, partly because your stomach will be tender and swollen and partly because you won't initially be able to take a big enough swallow of Water to get a big pill down. Some meds come in liquid form (ask your doc or pharmacist) but you will most likely end up crushing the bigger ones.
Dooter 1,457 Posted February 27, 2012 I was given a 6 week no swallowing whole pills restriction, but every surgeon is different. The hospitalist tried to tell me I'd have to crush pills forever because the new stomach is too small to quickly break down a big pill and you'd just poop it out. I'm ultimately going with my own doc's advice, as the hospitalist was not strictly a bariatric doc. I'm just wondering about time released stuff. Can't crush that. Lissa 2,631 Posted February 27, 2012 I swallow most of my pills whole, except for my multi Vitamin and Calcium. I did cut up the antibiotic pills I was on last month and took it as two pieces on the advice of my physician. I plan to switch to a non-chewable multi when I buy them this month, if I can find something that isn't a horse pill. Of course, I've never liked swallowing big pills, even pre-op. southerngirl 51 Posted February 27, 2012 Ok. That sounds good. I take a little pill that helps keep me from killing my husband since I had a hysterectomy. I shouldn't have a problem then. Thanks! 2 WhoozisAnyway and Lissa reacted to this

Helen the Cat 42 Posted February 27, 2012 Southerngirl said "I take a little pill that helps keep me from killing my husband since I had a hysterectomy. I shouldn't have a problem then. " I love it! I need to get some of those pills, he is sure I am going to kill him someday, after some of the smart remarks he makes! He would probably even buy them for me! chyna86 17 Posted March 18, 2012 I was advised to swallow my antibodies 1 day post op. They are the plastic capsule kind that you can twist open and are filled with powder. I have no clue how Im supposed to get it down or how my stomach is supposed to break down the plastic???? Not chancing it though. I break it open and pour the powder in some juice. Nasty but better safe than sorry
