Shortness Of Breath Five Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am five days post op and I have been getting pretty short of breath lately. Has anyone else experienced this? Otherwise I feel fine! No chills...fever..nausea ....I do have occasional gas bubbles but they pass! Thanks!

I did. But I had asthma early in my school days and used to have a bit of wheezing trouble every now and then. But my doc had me practice on a device called Respirometer (it is a small device with three cylindrical columns each having a small plastic ball). I practiced inhaling and exhaling through that device which allows you to make full use of your lungs. This helped me a great deal post-op. But I still had to use a nebulizer for the first two days.

And the gas bubbles - that is normal too. You could probably ask for some meds if it gets worse coz I had a bad time with gas and had to take the meds for a month.

Shortness of breath can be a pretty serious problem. Unless it's really-really minor, I'd be going to the ER, because it could be a blood clot in your lungs. It might not be big enough to give you chest pain and make you turn blue, but then those little ones can travel to your brain after instead of getting stuck in the lungs and give you a stroke. And then there's all the other stuff that's pretty serious - post-op Fluid in the lungs, pneumonia, etc. So you don't want to just sit on a symptom like that.

i'd be in the ER in a heart beat with shortness of breath. It's a very serious complication. I always think, "Safety first." Let us know how you doing bc we care about you. ;)

I had shortness of breath in the hospital and up to day 5. I had the co2 trapped in me and it was not allowing my lungs to inflate. I ended up taking Milk of Magnesia and boom just like that I was able to breath. I did this under my surgeon's direction, if it didn't work I was going to go to the ER.

Are you using your incentive spirometer? Any cough? As others have mentioned, shortness of breath is nothing to kid around with. You are apparently worried enough to mention it here; I'd call your surgeon's office in the morning and tell them as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
