roseann 0 Posted August 2, 2006 i just got out of the hospital last week. Fainted from low potassium, result of being sick with diarreah, had sever stomach cramps, got out of hospital after 4 days----diagnosis--diverticulitis. Now I need help with eating certain things. Anyone out there have this?
barbara465 2 Posted August 2, 2006 I have diverticulities and spastic colon. Since getting the band I haven't had diarreah. In fact, just the opposite which is all new to me. Having a spastic colon I was used to having food "turn" on me and heading for the bathroom. I now eat an Activia, a type of yogurt, everyday. It helps keep you regular without having to take Fiber. You might want to give this a try. You must have had a diverticuli get infected and that is no fun. I try to stay away from foods that I know will cause me problems. Hope you are on the mend. PM me if you have any additional questions or concerns. Its something I've had for years, but the band only 7 weeks.
MarcyD 0 Posted August 2, 2006 I have diverticulits and have been banded about 2 1/2 months. Last October I was admitted for 10 days with diverticulitis complicated by gastroparesis (A diabetic complication where the stomach doesn't empty normally.) I have actually done better with both things since the band, except for chronic Constipation which probably caused the diverticulitis in the first place. Dulcolax helps with that. I don't eat much corn (including popcorn-Sigh) or berries and my old sesame seed Bagels are pretty much out anyway, so it's not been much of an issue. barbara465 2 Posted August 2, 2006 I stay away from anything with seeds, especially small ones. I also can't tolerate salads. It's the lettuce that gets me. What you want to watch for is anything small and hard, like seeds, that can get lodged in the folds of the intestines and get infected.
roseann 0 Posted August 2, 2006 I am doing lots of reading on this, and trying to add Fiber to my diet. I was SOOO constipated for so long, now it is the opposite- I am adding fiber slowly. I eat chick pea salad, and have no problems with Beans. I can't do lettuce, the band is too tight for that. They say cheese, or dairy isn't good. Is that true? I have shredded wheat for Breakfast, lunch is a few slices of meat on 1/2 slice double fiber bread, dinner is meat, a tiny bit of potatoes for the low potassium problem. This is all new for me, who ate ricotta cheese, cottage cheese and lots of Protein almost everyday for so long. Everytime I got hungry, I ate cheese, which contributed to the straining. My diverticuli got infected somehow, but it feels better now. I just don't know what food will cause any further problems. I do know to stay away from anything seeded. Thanks for your replies.
