It's possible you have thrush, is there any sort of coating on your tongue or throat? It could also just be down to ketosis, which gives you really bad breath.

Yeah, that sounds like thrush, a type of oral yeast infection. You have to go to the dr and get meds for it else it won't clear up on its own. Once you get the meds, it clears up pretty fast.

Yeah, I think so -- I've seen a lot of cases on all the WLS boards. It's certainly not unheard of. It's also to do with antibiotics I think? I'm no expert, I've just read a lot about all the post-op issues, and this is one of them. :-)

Oh, well -- thrush CAN also come about via immunosuppression such as HIV, but it also comes after this surgery a lot for whatever reason (I really think it's antiobiotics, which they often give during and after surgery, along with a dry mouth for a couple days). And the surgery reason is much more likely. You know what doctors say, when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. Meaning, the most likely cause is the surgery, not HIV. (But if you have a reason to suspect any kind of sexually transmitted disease, getting checked for it is dead easy and will put your mind at ease.)

WOW!!!!!!!! Not sure how we went from bad breath to HIV but I hope that you are not sitting after reading this and thinking "Oh my God I have HIV." Thrush can be caused from many things. if indeed that is truely what you have. Going to the doctor will be your best bet. I am 9 weeks post op and wake up with a terrible taste in my mouth in the morning and also bad breath. I attribute it to what I eat in my diet and possibly medications and Vitamins that I may take on a daily basis. I know that it is not HIV. I do know that if you are taking certain antibiotics that this can also cause thrush. Do not sit and worry that you may be HIV positive. There are many other causes for thrust is that is indeed what you have. I would make an appt with your doctor and go in and see if he can tell you what it may be.......probably nothing that is caused by disease.

I was thinking ketosis until you said you had a white coating on your tongue. Go to the doctor and get some antibiotics. LMAO at the thought it could be HIV. I seriously doubt it's HIV. That usually doesn't start showing symptoms for months to years after infection.

Thrush is usually painful and the "white coating" is of a more "cottage-cheese like" consistency. Ketosis will also cause a whitish coating on the tongue sometimes. Unless you're having some sort of pain or discomfort, its most likely ketosis.

Thrush is caused by the antibiotics that they give you in the hospital or after surgery. By taking liquid antibiotics you disrupt the normal bacterial flora in your mouth and this imbalance allows yeast to grow unchecked causing thrush. This is the same way yeast infections develop in other areas (ladies!)... and guys, yes you can "catch" thrush from certain "activities". This is probably all TMI, but I think everyone should know these things.

I have had oral thrush before from being on a sustained course of antibiotics. With oral thrush your mouth REALLY hurts and your tongue hurts too and is swollen and can even become cracked. The whole inside of your mouth and tongue is coated in a thick white furry substance and talking and swallowing are painful. Treating it with a topical ointment smeared on the surfaces inside your mouth, and taking a course of tablets worked fairly quickly for me luckily.

If on the other hand you have yucky bog-breath from ketosis , I would also like to know how does one treat it? Do you just have to live with it? I would find that very hard to do as I deal with the public in my job all day long and it would be a major problem having them flinch away from me every time I talked to them.... a bit of a liability in my line of work so I am very interested in the answer to this question!

Well, you have two choices:

(1) You can eat more carbs so that your body has to rely less on using fatty acids. The downside of this is that your weightloss will slow.

(2) Deal with it. I've found that using a tongue scraper and a good mouthwash is really helpful. There is a "set" out there that you can find at alot of dentist's offices called BreathRx. The set includes the tongue scraper, mouthwash, and a spray that you can carry around to use as neccessary.

Could not have said that better myself.............

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
