Before The Houston Heat & Humidity Kicks In...

...which will not be long. Will some long-term sleevers from hot, humid areas mind to give some advice? Any! About anything you think someone could benefit from.

Examples:

1) Compression garments - breathable ones

2) Staying hydrated.

3) Did you find it easier to be in the heat after weight loss?

4) Did you burn easier?

5) Anything you used for sunscreen, repellant, etc. work better or worse?

6) How did you avoid rashes?

More- anything! Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure that my opinion/experience is relevant here as the great British summers aren't well known for the heat or humidity...lol... but what I did want to say is that after my sleeve I found the heat a lot more bearable; I could sit in the sun for a lot longer reading and wouldn't be covered in sweat! Also moving around in the heat is a lot easier, again, less sweating! I also noticed that I didn't get headaches from the glare of the sun either... not really sure why that happened but I am not complaining either!

I am hoping to go for a summer holiday to a country that is actually 'hot' this year, so that will be the real test!

I was sleeved last April and went through our New Orleans summer MUCH more comfortably. Now, down 141 pounds from my highest weight, I'm FREEZING even in our extremely temperate winter and cannot wait for summer. :-)

I didn't notice any issues with additional sunburning, but I'm not a sunbather. Staying hydrated is still a problem for me now, so I have to be careful. Nothing new there.

And rashes are actually LESS frequent now--I don't have the same problems with heat rash in the "creases" of the body, and my bra band doesn't rub across sweaty skin any more, so that has completely disappeared.

I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised with how you feel this summer. Like I said, I can't wait!! And yeah, outdoor activities are going to be SO much more fun. :-)

Edited to add that it's also really great not to break into a sweat just from moving from the house to the car--and I rarely run my air conditioner in the car any more--just don't need it. Moving into a sun-warmed car feels good, the way it did when we were little kids.

Yes to what MeginNOLA said. I live in San Antonio and heat and humidity much easier to bear. I used to hate the weather here. It is not bad now. I get cold easily though.

I went into last summer in Houston 70 pounds lighter. OMG- it made such a difference. By the end of summer I was down 100 pounds total. I actually didn't mind the 100+ degree heat. I didn't notice any issues with sunburns but I am a sunscreen spaz. :)

I used my usually compression garments and found I sweat much less than I used to. Because of less sweating and less touching skin, I really didn't have to deal with rashes.

As a fellow Houstonian, let me tell you that you are going to love home so much more now that you won't be so miserable due to the high heat six months out of the year!

Yay!

Amanda

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
