"liquid" Food On The Plane?

Recommended Posts

I'm supposed to be on Clear Liquids 3 days prior to surgery, which means I will be flying during that time. How am I supposed to take broth and Jello on the plane? What have you done?

How long is the flight? I drank apple juice and Water but my flight was only 2.5 hours. If you have a stopover you can always tank up then.

I have those calorie free/no sugar Water enhancers, that you squirt into water. It will it's less than 3oz, so I can take that aboard. I was also considering taking a ziploc baggy with some powdered chicken broth. Perhaps I can ask for hot water...

I'll be flying for about 5 hours, then have one layover. I've never had to do liquids only for 3 days. Scared I'm going to starve lol.

How about a couple of ziploc baggies each containing a serving of your Protein drink powder? You could ask for water to mix with those too and they may help a bit with hunger ...

All the best with your surgery -- looking forward to your updates!

Great idea! I think I'll take both, so I have a choice :-)

The Protein Powder in single servings is a great idea - I did that. Also, take the spice packets out of ramen noodles and take those with you. Works wonders putting a little in some hot Water :) Great flavor and really satisfying :)

I didn't - just some comfy pants and a really baggy tshirt. I didn't really want to wear a robe because they cinch around the waist - and mine cinches right where my incisions were. Up to you though!

You know, I am glad I came on the board, I haven't been on here all week cause work is so busy...but this is totally not something I had thought about! I am glad to see the post. My flight is also 2.5 hours but I guess I need to be slightly more prepared than I am! Good ideas everyone....

I'm going to be in the air or in transit almost 9 hours each way.... Worrisome. I'm buying some of those Protein Shots. They are 3oz, and am placking my ziplock with mostly them. Then bringing a sample pack of Shampoo and conditioner so they take up less room. I'd like to avoid checking baggage. That just seems stupid.

I can't recall where I read this thread, but in another thread on the same issue, several people said they just had their Isopure, or Protein Drinks or whatever in their full form and sealed. They put them independently in the tub, not in their baggie and ignored the 3oz rule. When the TSA asked about it, they explained that they were having/had just had gastric surgery and could only consume specific liquids, and that they needed to be doing so almost continually. They were allowed to bring them through as such with no issues. The tSA had a special scanner that checks the liquid. The TSA website talks about how you can bring things like liquid medication, breast milk and other necessary liquids in larger format if actually necessary. It's a thought. I might just risk it and see. The worst they can do is make you pitch it or check your bag if you won't toss it.

Other things to consider taking with you when you have surgery

1. Chapstick

2. Heating pad (feels SO good on the sore tummy!)

3. Extra pillow to support your tummy when laying on your side in

bed. (the hospital in Mexico where I had my surgery said they didn't

have extra pillows, one to a patient.)

4. Comfy jammies (I hated those hospital gowns that "gap" in the back!)

5. laptop, I Pad, etc so you can communicate with friends, family back home

6. Kindle or book to read (the hospital where I had surgery had no English

speaking TV!)

7. Chargers for any electronic devices you are taking with you!

Of course, if you don't want to have to check your luggage, this makes it a problem to take some of these things. I just have NEVER mastered the art of "traveling light" much to my husband's dismay!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
