choking at night

Recommended Posts

I haven't been here for a while but I always seem to get good advice when I do come. Im not sure what happened, but the other day I started choking in my sleep. It was a funny tasting acid I was choking on. I was up a few times throwing up trying to get rid of what ever was there. Now for two night in a row it has happened, Im not sure of what to do or even who to call. I just moved to Colorado 3 weeks ago and of course I know nobody. I did have fill done a few weeks before I left with a heavy saline, I think that was a mistake. Then with the elevation my band has gotten tighter. If anyone has a name of a doctor or any answers for me I would greatly appriciate it !!!

If you are having reflux at night you probably need an unfill. I dont know any docs in that area. In the meantime try taking some Pepsid or some OTC acid blocker. Hopefully someone else can chime in with some better or additional advice!

I was suffering from the same stuff. I let it go on for almost a month but I finally went to my doctory yesterday and they gave me an unfill. Much better today. They said to leave it out for two weeks and then come back and they will gradually give it back to me. They called it pouch delepitation???? (not sure how to spell it)

Pouch dilitation happens when you've been overfilled. The pouch begins to bulge above the band. Sort of like wearing a belt that is too tight..our fat rolls sort of bulge. This is dangerous to your band (can cause slippage) and to your esophagus as well as your lungs, if you begin to have reflux (backing up of food and liquids) when you lie down. Waking up 'choking' or throwing up is very serious. It's damaging to your esophagus but more importantly, it can cause aspiration pneumonia. This is not a symptom to 'wish' away. OTC medications rarely help, an unfill is what is needed and pronto. Always call your doctor if you wake up aspirating.

You are too tight and are experiencing reflux. You need to find a doctor ASAP and get some saline taken out. Long term, you will wish you had.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
