Lost 30 Lbs On My Own. Should I Go Throu With Vsg?

Recommended Posts

I know what I have to do. It's just the emotions and fear that has me questioning. I have a wonderfully supportive husband who is trying hard not to tell me how he feels about my having the surgery. I can tell that he is scared so I'm trying to stay positive for both of us which is getting harder and harder as my surgery date comes up.

My husband didn't say much about it before my surgery. I was actually wondering if he understood the magnitude of this procedure. So, I asked him outright what he felt about me doing this. He said he was frightened but knew what I was doing was what I needed to be happy, but he loved me the way I was.

He never did express any negative comments about the surgery, and when I about lost it in pre-op, he let the nurse know how upset I was (she gave me valium). At that time he could have just taken me home (I wanted to escape) with no complaints from me, but he knew that was just nerves causing that fit and so he got me through it.

I think it is completely normal and sane to second guess yourself for a procedure such as this, especially since so many of us get uplifted by losing weight in preparation for the surgery! But, how many times have we lost the same 30 pounds (or more)?

I lost 100 lbs on my own over the course of 5 years and still had the surgery. It was really hard getting the weight off by myself. I kept going back to my old ways of overeating and not exercising.

Yep, I felt this way too. Actually my primary doctor made me pause for a good 24 hours. I lost about 4 pounds in a month (which I regained) and as I was getting off the scale she said "Maybe you don't need this surgery". Aaaaaaaaah! She is a great doctor and had been very supportive all along, so her words came as a surprise. Luckily for me the next morning I remembered how many times and how hard I had tried to lose and keep the weight off on Weight Watchers (and other diets). I never looked back. My doctor continues to be supportive and I have never been happier!

Best of luck! Only you know what is right for you. :)

The same here, I can lose the weight, but will put it back on if I stop excercising. My life is too busy to exercise everyday. Also, I have a knee injury, and once the knee goes out, I am out of the gym for about 2 months. The surgery will help me keep the weight off without stressing over going to the gym. My gym time will be 3 times a week, I love the gym

Bumblebee, everyone's mind plays these tricks on us before surgery. I'm starting to believe it's just part of the process of preparing for the drastic step you're about to take. Don't let the mind crap keep you from doing this if you've already decided this is what you should do for yourself. The risks of obesity are too high. Personally, I was given a year to live if I didn't get this weight off me in a hurry, so my mental process was a little easier. But, to paraphrase someone on the lap band boards, they don't sleeve our heads, just our stomachs. The rest is up to us.

Good luck! :)

Wow, this topic really hit home with me. Thank you everyone for the encouragement. I have lost 60 pre-op and started thinking I can do this on my own again. I went from 330 - 128 in the past and kept it off myself for 5 years. I got sick though and had to have a few surgeries and spent almost 3 months in and out of the hospital and hit 200. After I hit 200 I met my husband and I would yo-yo from 200-250, 200 would be the "new skinny". Then wham back up over 300 again. The sad realization was then 250 became the new skinny. I can't do this anymore. It's time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
