The answer to why I'm not losing...

Recommended Posts

Yup, that's exactly right, cortisol is a hormone, and it's "supposed" to be produced by either the adrenal glands (on the kidneys) or in the pituitary gland (in the brain).

And cortisol does have an amazing effect on weight, either gaining, losing or maintaining. It, like other hormones, also plays a big part on where fat will be depositied. High levels of cortisol will cause more fat deposits around the central trunk, just as estrogen causes weight to be distributed in the breasts, and hips and thighs.

In addition ot large amounts of cortisol in my system, I also have "freakishly high" amounts of testosteron in my system.

There is a reason Cushing's is called "the obesity disease."

I think on the actual depo website one of the side effects listed is gaining weight. I am on depo now and I am due for a shot today but being that I was banded recently, I think I opt out of the shot.

I went to my surgeon for a fill today and told him about the Depo. He also said that this could be the cause for my not losing the weight. He was pretty disgusted that the GYN didn't think about my surgery prior to giving me the shots. He said that he's had many patients run into trouble with the Depo but that not everyone is affected. I am one of the 'lucky' ones. So, he told me we'd concentrate on getting me the proper restriction so that at least I would have the bandworking to help me with eating the right amount without 'dieting'. He gave me a big hug and told me to try not to get discouraged, stay off the scale (I gave it to my daughter) and to increase my aerobics exercise to at least four times per week with walking the other days. :phanvan

I now have 1.6cc's and I am praying I have restriction now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
