strawberryblue 10 Posted February 24, 2012 I just wanted to share this about my nutritionist visit (pre-op). The Bariatric NUT that is normally used at the hospital was out, so I had to use her co-worker. Unfortunately she was not a fan of weight loss surgery. First, when I came in, she said "Well let's go over this dietary paperwork. Keep in mind if I don't like your answers, I am NOT signing off on you to have this surgery." I thought that was incredibly awkward. In the middle of explaining the liquid diet, she stopped and sighed and said, "OK look.. I just wish I had a way to hyponotize anyone who came in that was obese. If you just followed a low calorie diet and exercised like you're supposed to, you'd lose weight. You need to remember the surgery makes your stomach smaller but it doesn't fix your head." At the end of the session, she looked at me almost like she felt sorry for me and asked me to please, please think long and hard before having this surgery since it could have the potential of ruining my life. I don't have unrealistic expectations about surgery so she didn't tell me anything I hadn't already considered. But when I left this NUT I started crying in the elevator, thinking, "WHAT have I gotten myself into!" Thankfully my sister was with me at the time and made me feel better about it (she thought the NUT was a bit much also). Missmarbe 25 Posted February 24, 2012 She sounds CRAZY!!!!!!! If I were you, I would complain and potentially get another NUT appointment (free of charge).
Lyra 43 Posted February 24, 2012 Wow. Just...wow. The idiocy of that woman astounds me. I just adore *sarcasm* the "get off your ass and close your mouth and the weight will drop off, as you frolic through a meadow filled with scampering puppies and tweeting birdies" approach that she was rocking during her meeting with you. Where was the professionalism? Yes, she had some points about how the surgery can't fix any head/food issues, and that this surgery is permanent. Yet there are ways that those concerns and questions could be asked without making you feel so ackward and/or uncertain/depressed/scared about your surgery. Also, what doctor starts off a meeting with a statement that is guaranteed to stress someone out? Furthermore, it pretty much scews any answer to her questions as you're more apt to give her the answers you think she wants to hear, versus what you are actually thinking/feeling. What an idiot. Two thumbs up for keeping your cool during the appointment! At least now it's over and you can move on to the next step in your journey! 1 strawberryblue reacted to this

Foxbins 625 Posted February 24, 2012 There are people who will never understand that the obese have a different relationship to food and probably a different metabolism. I think your nutritionist was one of them. It's my own personal opinion that nutritionists become nutritionists because they have food issues themselves, but I have no idea if that's true or not. I will say that I don't think their personal opinions about weight loss surgery should color their assessment or recommendations.
clk 3,519 Posted February 24, 2012 Yes, clearly your NUT is right and everyone here that opted for surgery is simply lazy and lacking in the willpower department. Either that, or she's an opinionated idiot that acted totally unprofessionally. I'm going with this one. First and foremost, report her. It is not her job to talk you out of surgery using scaremongering tactics and negativity. The surgeon that referred you to that NUT office has a right to know how his/her patients are treated by this supposed professional. Secondly, relax. We all run into at least one person that feels that we're using a magic bullet or taking the easy way out without thinking. These people are sometimes medical professionals, and sometimes they're our overweight "friends." If you didn't have doubts before the appointment, you shouldn't have them now. You'll be fine. Too many in the healthcare profession simply parrot what they've been taught: that weight loss is a simple matter of willpower, diet and exercise and that a 1200 calorie diet is one-size-fits-all. If you aren't losing weight, a lot of them assume you simply aren't trying. If you know that you've tried in the past and haven't seen results do not let the opinion of one person, medical professional or not, dissuade you from your choice. Your life will change post sleeve and sometimes you'll be frustrated and you might even have buyers remorse if you hit some rough Patches. But overall you are going to be thrilled with finally achieving your goals and the sleeve is going to help you do that - AND keep the weight off as well. Best of luck to you. ~Cheri 2 strawberryblue and atkinsoncl reacted to this
atkinsoncl 62 Posted February 24, 2012 Yes, I definatley agree to report her. That was completely uncalled for!! They need be aware of what she has done and what she is doing to people. If it was so easy for us to loose the weight, I don't think we would choose weight loss surgery for the fun of it. Unfortunately, it is not that easy for those of us. Please don't let her discourage you. She obviously has a low mentality level.
