Would You Have Done It?

Recommended Posts

No co-morbidities before surgery, but I'm 42 and at 200 lbs. overweight, that can turn on a dime. I had to get out of this danger zone, and it wasn't happening under MY power, so Here I am post-op a week and a half and doing well, healing well, and I can see the good changes coming, thank you Jesus!!

I didn't have co-morbidities, so I would also choose to do the surgery. I was in the lower range of normal blood pressure, had normal cholesterol, no diabetes or heart problems, etc. I was just fat. I wanted to get my life back BEFORE I got any of those things. I got the surgery first and foremost as a preventive measure, after that it was for vanity reasons. I didn't want to wait until I was older, bigger, and unhealthier.

I had a hard time with my insurance because they normally wouldn't do the surgery unless I did have any of those complications. They didn't understand that I needed the surgery so I wouldn't get those. In the long run, I'm saving them money because I won't be going to doctors all the time because of complications.

No health problems except aching knees. I was very active and wanted to improve my quality of life. As I have told several people your weight effects you in different ways. It was easier for me to handle that amount of weight when I was younger but now that I am older I feel different, more aches.

Thanks for all your replies....VSG sure has made my life turn a 180 degrees. I feel like a new person everyday and look forward to everyday. I think I have stopped 'existing' and begun 'living'. :)

I had no comorbidities and I did it! I thought of it as a preventative measure.

I didn't have any co-morbidities before surgery--I was just fat, and saw myself becoming fatter and fatter unless I did something to totally change my life. So glad I picked VSG.

Same here! By keeping on the weight I knew I'd have issues down the line. I would still be 300 lbs or more right now if I didn't have the surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
