So I have a question for you, I'm two weeks out and on Mushy/soft foods. Tonight I had about 1/2 cup mashed potatoes with maybe a tablespoon of sloppy joe mix on top. I was able to eat it no problem. Is this normal or average? I have been mostly on Protein Shakes I was not into all my food going in a blender. I was just kinda surprised that I was able to it a full half a cup. I felt fine but can't help but think I shouldn't be able to eat that much so soon. I'm terrified that I'm going to stretch my pouch out.

I was still on liquids at two weeks, so not sure that this is comparing apples to apples, but I wasn't really able to eat a half a cup of anything (if I recall correctly - seems like ages ago). Did you eat it slow? I have heard that mashed potatoes go right through, so maybe it was because of the type of food. I still haven't tried mashed potatoes.

I was not able to eat mushy foods until week four. However, I know at two weeks I would have never been able to mashed potatoes because til this day I still don't feel like eating them. At two weeks I was in such a horrible state so there would have been no way

AK Mama, everyone is different in what they can tolerate. I doubt I could have eaten a full half cup of anything that soon post-op, but the consistency of your mashed potatoes and the sloppy joe mix probably made a difference. If they were very loose and liquidy, then they probably slid right through your sleeve, making it easier to eat more.

A couple of things to keep in mind: If you have a scale, always measure your food. I could do about 2-3 oz of food at your stage. Also, always eat only until you're satisfied, not until you are full. Especially early post-op, these two things will save you a ton of discomfort and/or actual pain. I notice that I can eat more early in the day than I can later in the afternoon. I also sometimes have days where I want more food than other days, usually around TOM.

Once you start on denser Proteins, it will be especially important to measure your food and to only eat till your satisfied rather than full. Learning those two things will make your weight loss and your day to day life easier. I've only had one problem with being sick from food, and that was because I took a drink of liquid after a particularly big meal. I think that following the two rules I listed has helped tremendously with that!

Ay 2 weeks out i would have never been able to get 1/2 cup in my stomach. I was still swollen and had difficulty getting liquids in. But everyone's sleeve's different. I agree with Lissa and the 2 rules she gave. They are important and it also decreases the fear of stretching our sleeve. ;)

Two days after my surgery I was still in the hospital and they gave me mashed potatoes. I couldnt put down not even half a spoon but my doctors said it was ok. I would try mashed yams instead. It has more nutritional value.

I would have thought so as well but they have been on my surgeon and nut's suggested dietary intake beginning at week 2 post op (pureed stage). they do, however, suggest to eat Protein dense foods first then the mashed taters! :wacko: all surgeon's have different diets it can be so confusing ha!

Yea, thats exactly what my Nuttritionalist said that at this stage mashed potatoes was fine because your only eating such a little amount. I will say that now that I have tried other foods I do get full a lot faster and can't eat nearly as much. I have been so lucky though in that I haven't gotten sick from anything that I have tried. I did take your advise and bought me a new scale so that I can measure my food so I can start getting an idea of portion sizes.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
