Heating Blankets Recommendations Please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I had no idea buying a heating blanket could be so confusing! I have read a ton of posts on Amazon and people complain about them regardless of the price paid. All the features are driving me nuts as well. I read some even have a bunch of wires between the blanket and the electrical outlet.

I am looking for a twin size to keep on my side of the bed that I can just plug easily and be warm at night! Nothing complicated! (My husband doesn't want it near him so that eliminates the heated bed covers). Please share brands, models, where you bought yours etc.

I bought a Sunbeam heated throw. It's definitely smaller than a twin but I love it because I just throw it over the comforter and then if I get too hot I can toss it on the floor in the middle of the night. We sleep in a standard king and my partner wants nothing to do with it so it's worked out great for us!!! Oh, I got it at Walgreen's. I also like that I can take it downstairs with me and us it on the couch if I'm watching TV.

:)

The most amazing 'heating blankets' I own are down comforters with the chamois duvet covers. The second you crawl under them it's like you've plugged something in! They are big, fluffy, divine feeling, and don't stink like electrical stuff.

At night our heat goes down to 55f and my kids have never once gotten cold! They were so amazing that my hubs and I got one for us too.

@Lisa- I love the idea of a throw so I can " toss it on the floor in the middle of the night!"

@Bedhead-Thanks for reminding me I have my daughters old twin down comforter in a closet somewhere! That might not solve the "cold sheets" issue though. Nevertheless I will give it a shot tonight. :)

Keep those ideas coming please!

I wanted one that was auto shut off. They were pretty pricey. However, one day at the end of the season, I walked into Walmart and purchased 2 $10 and $15. They weren't ASO but worked great the same. Any place that sells them should have them on clearance soon.

My husband got me this heated mattress pad for this past Christmas in King Size.

You put it under your fitted sheet. There are temperature controls for each side of the bed so I can be toasty and he doesn't have to feel the heat. You can't feel any wires or discomfort AT ALL. The bed feels exactly the same as it always did, only now I can warm up my side before I crawl in. It doesn't make any noise, it's just great. I don't know how I lived without it for so long. If I had any complaint, it would be that it doesn't heat evenly (some spots get warmer than others). It doesn't really matter since I'm just looking to be warm under my blankets, but it's odd. Other than that, it's better and more comfortable than any electric blanket.

We have a king size bed. My mother in-law sent hubs home with an electric blanket. I did not want one on my side like your husband. I found myself inching to hubs side of the bed because it felt soooooo good!! We now have a Sunbeam King Size. It has dual controls so your husband doesn't have to have it on, but I bet he does sooner or later. Hope this helps! ^_^

What Jackie said, the pad is THE way to go. I was cold underneath with a heated blanket. The pad warms by bottom and of course heat rises. The queen / kings are dual control so hubby doesn't have to even turn it on.

One thing I did not like is the wires near my feet, I could not feel them very much elsewhere, just at my feet. So we took a bath towel and put it over that area and the top sheet keeps it in place. No more wires and the thin towel doesn't effect heat output much at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
