Recommended Posts

I am 36 years old and addicted to food. I will have my sleeve before april 14th. I am scared if i don't i am going to eat myself to death. On the other hand, i am scared if i get the sleve i will out eat it. I have had a lot of anxiety about this. Any suggestions.

Overeaters Anonymous is a wonderful organization that helps us get to the root of our addiction. Like any other tool, it works if you work it! There is also Celebrate Recovery, another fine organization, which is Bible-based. I know for me it is important to keep working on the "whys" I eat, even after I have my surgery.

bean, I think that lots of us have issues with eating too much food. Many don't go all the way to "addiction", but it's a common problem for bariatric patients. I suggest seeing a therapist to help you deal with the issues you have with food, both before and after surgery. It will definitely be money well spent.

Now, that doesn't mean that I don't think the sleeve can help curb food addiction. I do. But you are going to have to do the head work. Our tummy is sleeved, not our heads. You simply cannot eat the volume of food after surgery that you could before surgery. It's not possible without doing great physical harm to yourself. You'll have to re-learn how to eat, both smaller amounts and healthier foods. It's definitely something that can be done, but you'll have to put in the effort, too.

Good luck with whatever route you choose. :)

I am a food addict too. I had the surgery this past Halloween. At first I couldn't binge if I tried. Now several months post-op I have to really watch it or I'll fall back into my old habits. I have to remind myself that this sleeve surgery is a tool to help me beat my addiction and get healthy. I suggest you do some soul searching and see if you're really ready to put your addiction behind you, otherwise it will be a huge waste of money. I wish you luck with your journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
