Anti-Inflamatory Med?

Recommended Posts

I have an impingement in my shoulder and its rearing its ugly head since Friday when I swam a bit harder than usual. The docs give us tylenol but I think they said we can't take ibuprofen. Does anyone take anything stronger that tylenol for pain and inflamation??

(Sleeved 12/5)

I also swim and am dealing with shoulder pain. However, I think I sprained it, because I haven't been allowed back in the pool since my surgery. I'm so frustrated, because I'm ready to swim, but I decided to give my shoulder a little more time. No, I can't have anything but Tylenol. However, I've been keeping the heating pad on it, and tonight I went to the store for Aspercream. That at least has aspirin in it and maybe some will get in there and reduce the inflammation. I'm curious to know if anyone else has ideas.

When was your surgery? I was allowed back as soon as my drain incision healed...about 3 weeks. Whooosh that felt good. I'm up to a mile and Friday I pushed too much and coulnt lift my left arm over my head. I've laid low since fri and the trainer did only lower body work today...but I miss the pool already...even kicking hurts my shoulders to hold onto the board or whatever....waaah

try icing the area with a cube of ice inside plastic wrap, massage the cube of ice into the spot or spots that hurt. this actually calms inflammation and swelling

Yes, right after the injury that can help or after therapy for a bit but its not something that actually can be done while your trying to get on with your life and the effect is rather short lived. I've been thru this before with this shoulder and other injuries. I need a drug...big time. I'm trying to function as a human being...anyway, I can't reach the spot to massage it.

I survived on Indocin before my surgery and I'm functionally disabled without it. I need to have both my knees replaced, and in the meantime, without NSAIDS I'm in constant pain. Swimming was the one thing I could do (when my knees were good enough to get me into/out of the pool), and I miss it! I'm so mad that my shoulder is giving me problems. I'm going to try ice today. Maybe that will help a bit. This feels like something that's going to take weeks to heal. Sigh...

Long-term NSAID therapy bring with it a host of stomach-related concerns, which can be ameliorated somewhat by concurrent use of a good PPI. I was self-medicating with way too much Alleve until my stomach started hurting, and then they moved me first to Disalcid (with prilosec) and then Mobic (with protonix). I wasn't allowed to take my NSAID until 4 weeks after surgery, and believe me I was effectively disabled until I could.

If you are interested in trying a medication, this is something to discuss with your doctor, especially with the VSG aspect. Make sure you know what the warning signs are of a potential stomach reaction, as (I've heard) they can progress quickly once they start.

I was told I can use NSAIDs but no longer than 5 days, this is one of the reasons I choose the sleeve. I have used ibuprofen with something in my belly before hand.

Finally had shoulders evaluated...am exceptionally weak! Starting with dental dams and 3# bar. Have PT 2x/week added to 6 days of training with and without the trainer. Slept this afternoon!

Doc approved ibuprofen with nexium...but couldn't stomach the meds so stopped. Think I'll look for a good massage

Aren’t NSAIDs more for minor or chronic inflammation? For acute inflammation, I prefer short term steroids like prednisone or dexamethasone to nuke inflammation. If the inflammation recurs, I go for a steroid shot in the affected area. Is there a waiting period on steroids after sleeve surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
