Black tongue?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever heard of this???

I was talking with my sister today and she told me my tongue was black! I went and checked it out and sure enough, it looked like I had eaten licorice (which I hadn't).

I was able to brush it off, but it was like a black mossy growth on my tongue.

I'm thinking maybe because I haven't eaten real food. Today I had Water, Jello, Protein drink (chococlate flavor) and Water and some chicken broth.

I talked to a friend today, and she said it happened once to her after she had some Pepto Bismal.

It was really weird. I"m going the the dr. tomorrow and I"ll ask her about it.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this happen to them, and when and why.

I've had the black tongue - after taking Pepto Bismol. I had no idea Pepto did that and it scared the crap out of me.

appto Bismol is known to cause it (actually it's a reaction with Pepto's active ingredient). I don't take it but DH takes the pills occasionally, and it says on the bottom that it may cause temporary -- tongue blackening. :)

Did you take Pepto?

If you didn't, did you eat anything extra high in Iron?

If not, and even if so, mention it to your doc. It can be a symptom of some other issues.

I have had a brown color tounge since having the band put in two years ago. My dentist tells me about it all the time. Didn't have it before the band. I scrape my tounge daily, brush teeth and tounge dailey, use mouthwash. I have it when not drinking coffee. Never goes away.

My wife had her band done same day, same doctor. No brown tounge.

IT has to have something to do with the band as I never had this before except when I took Pepto-Bismal. I havn't had pepto-bismal in years either.

In time maybe we will know why some get it and some do not after getting the band.

I've never had it happen before or after surgery. Not even after Pepto Bismol. I have had some brown on my tongue, my dentist says it's from coffee so I have to brush my tongue daily to keep it away.

i think i remember that if your in ketosis ( like when someone has been on high Protein and low carb diet) the papillae on the tongue will become black (black hairy tongue is what it is called) also some chemical in some breath mints will cause black hairy tongue this i have seen first hand on some of my dental patient.

Mine was a fetching shade of khaki green, lovely. The doc said it was caused by not eating solid foods - they exfoliate the tongue and keep it clean. It brushed off and the problem went away once I was eating normally again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
