I do my fitness pal, it says I'm under goal what does everyone stick to as far as calories? Do you eat your calories or never hit the goal for some reason my calories is 1500 which I feel is really high....

myfitnesspal is not designed specifically for someone with a sleeve. Its just used to track, don't pay too much attention to the "goal" that they set. Track your calories, Protein, liquids, carbs etc by the guidelines your surgeon/doctor set for you. You should in now way be getting 1500 calories in during a day.

yea..the app doesn't know you're a gastric patient so it gives you advice based on a non sleevie..

I figured that my issue is that my doctor didn't give me a set calories and he's so busy so I'm trying to find out what other people eat drink how many calories I eat three times a day but I work out and I get nauseous a lot so not much stays down

My doctors goal for me is 800-1000 and I am 6 months out. You can adjust your goal on MFP by going to My Home, Goals, scroll down and Change Goals, Custom, then set your calories, % of Protein (I set that first and then go by whatever MFP says for fat and carbs - and I don't pay alot of attention to those #'s). It will still give you a blub at the bottom when you complete your daily diary that you are eating too few calories but it will at least show a normal calorie and protein goal for you.

I'm not sure we should have a calorie goal as we lose. My nutritionis and surgeon both won't give me an answer when I've asked them. They just tell me that I should focus on getting in all of my Protein and fluids and the rest we will worry about once I've lost all the weight. *shrugs*

My surgeon's office told me between 800 to 1000 calories at 3 months post op. I seldom ever get to 1000 calories. ;)

My doc said 400-600 for the first 2-3 weeks, then 600-800 for the next 5 months. But I'm learning that compared to other doctors, he's really strict. I've heard to little can cause the weight loss to slow down, so I'm not sure. Just be sure the calories are coming from good healthy choices and shakes. Watch the carbs (no more than 40g) and fat (no more than 30g) with NO rice, potato, bread, flour, Pasta, etc. or "high carb" veggies. Get your Protein down first, then shoot for the good veggies like broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes, celery, spinach, cucumbers, green Beans (very cooked at first is important, no raw for a while!!) Watch your sodium intake as well, that can hide in lots of sources. The old max used to be 2500mg, they recently changed it to 1500mg. Most days, I'm hitting 1500 or just over it.

Aim for 800 and see what works for you! There is a way to set your own caloric goal in MFP under settings.

This is basically what I have been told too. It is challenging enough to get all my Protein in. I do keep track of protein grams, calories, and Water intake on a post-it note each day. I range anywhere from 500 to 1000 depending on how much I can get down in a particular day. I have never gone over 1000 that I am aware of.

I eat about 600 calories a day and really struggle to get my Protein in, but I'm getting better! And of course I always eat my protein first. That really does help! I use MFP to keep myself accountable, but right now it is most useful for tracking nutrients, not calories, to be sure I'm not eating too much in the way of carbs/fat (though I give myself a break sometimes on those--600 calories is quite low and I can't hold more so I do vary what I am eating.)

PLEASE talk to your nutritionist before you go on Weight Watchers as well--the points system is not always compatible with what we need to do, especially right after surgery. For example, most fruit is zero points, but we know we can't eat fruit without thinking about it! Consulting your nutritionist is the best thing you can do.

Right now my nutritionist has me eating 2 servings of fruit a day. I am 11 weeks post op tomorrow. I met with her last week and after talking about my energy levels she suggested doing the 2 servings a day as the carbs from the fruit should help with energy. She said to make sure I have in those two servings of fruit BEFORE reaching for a vegetable. I admit, I'm not perfect and sometimes it's hard to get in all the Protein and fruit- but I'm going to ask her if 100% fruit juice with no added sugars can count... That way it helps up my Fluid intake as well.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
