How much time did it take from the moment you decided you were going to get sleeved to the time you actually had the surgery?

Thanks

I decided around the third week in January and scheduled for March 27 ... but I think I could have likely booked something in mid-February. I booked later because of my own scheduling needs.

Thanx for the responses!

May I also ask how much you invested in yourself?

My surgery will be around $19000 including blis insurance

I had my consult on 01/04/12 and had surgery on 02/09/12. I could have scheduled it earlier (about 2wks) but, I wanted to give my job plenty of notice and get things organized before I had the surgery.

Plus, I needed time to "wrap my head around it". I had to get the nerve up to have the surgery. I'm a big baby.

My surgery is $4500 plus airfare and a hotel night before the surgery. I feel fortunate to have found a doctor who is both affordable (for me) and experienced so that I could just go ahead and get it done :)

I decided on having the sleeve done in October 2011...I called a number of doctors and got quotes, to get an idea how much I would need....I cant have it done until June 2012, due to my schedule....my date is June 11,2012

It was a little over a year. I researched for a long time and had finally made my initial consultation when I had some money saved up. My surgery was 3 months after my consultation.

2-3 months sounds like the average after you enter the pre op stage. I too was self pay and had a BLIS certified surgeon (best ones to go to since they have the lowest complication stats) Cost me about $17,000 so you're not too far off that amount.

From the time I decided to self-pay to the day of surgery was just about a month and a week - I could have done it sooner, but I decided to schedule it for a specific day so my husband could go with me.

I played with the idea for years but never felt comfortable with the bypass at all. I also was living a fantasy for there was no way I could of ever afford it in the states. When a guest came in to my job and told me she had the sleeve done. I found this site and saved every nickle, dime and penny. I never looked back and knew it was for me. From the time she told me till the time I was flying to Mexico was around 4 months.

Six months. But that's only because I had to sell some property before the funds were freed up. Otherwise it would have been more like...2 or 3.

I was sleeved on 1/9/12 by Dr. Perez in Cancun Mexico. Total cost, $8,100.00 which included the laparorascopic surgey, hospital, Dr.s fee, my flight to mexico, 3 nights at the Westin Hotel. I had to pay only for my wife to fly down with me. I was getting quoted up to $35,000.00 from Duke and as low as $13,000 in Ocala Fl. I was going to have the bypass but read about this new surgery in the US called the sleeve, and after reading that it had been approved in europe in 2000, the us only approved it in 2009, the Dr. s in Mexico have been doing this surgery for years. My Dr. has done 1000's. He did some of training in Miami. Great guy and I would recommend him to to anyone.

I live in Los Angeles and had my consultation jan 18 and my sleeve done feb 13.

I saw all the doctors in between and total cost $20k.

I know I could've done it for half in Mexico but I could not bare THR thought of being in another country doing something like this.

Many have success stories going there but I feel that's a personal choice and for me wasn't even an option.

My cost does include 5 years of all tests, blood work, and office visits including nurses and nutritionist and so on. Plus past that it includes unlimited access to the nurse and nutritionist. So I am happy with my decision.

It was worth it to me to be close to home to ease my kids and husband and have their support. My husband stayed in the hospital both days with me and I've had to go back to see my dr once and having him so close and available was good for me.

No matter what you chose, or where, be comfortable with your consultations and have more than one if possible, I saw two dr's previous to the one I chose and having the right feel for a dr is big. Pay attention to you insticnct.

Good luck on your journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
