Watermelons... Too Much Sugar?

Recommended Posts

Is it okay if I have watermelon juice daily? I love watermelons and I figured it would mostly have just Water. I saw the nutritional chart of watermelon in wiki and found that every 100g of watermelon has 6.2 gms sugar and 7.55 gm carbs - is this a safe level to consume daily?

PS: I do not add any sweeteners to the juice.< /p>

In my opinion (LOL--not a doctor or nutritionist!), if you're going to have fruit, have the fruit, not just the juice. juice is concentrated sugar, and yes, it has Vitamins and minerals, especially if you're having it fresh, but it will slide down with no added fiber--you get the calories without getting the "full" factor. And watermelon doesn't have a ton of calories, but watermelon JUICE sure does--almost pure sugar. And I'm saying all this with regret, since I, too, love watermelon. I ate small cubes of it this past summer and enjoyed it a lot. I would stay away from just the juice, though, of watermelon or really any fruit, just because I think it's smart to get that sugar along with some Fiber and bulk to avoid overdoing.

Now, if you were to take your watermelon juice and dilute it with some Water, okay, that I can see, but again, if you just love the sweet flavor of the melon, that won't cut it after a while, and I think I personally would gradually be lowering the Water content in order to taste more of the juice (I know my tastebuds!!). Just eat some fruit! I have enjoyed juicy fruits like melon and citrus from around 3 months out. In fact, that sounds good right about now--grapefruit, here I come!

Watermelon is a high glycemic index food, which means it loads sugar quickly into the blood and might get an insulin response. That being said, last summer, I ate some almost every day and lost weight, I would just watch and see if it makes you hungry, or if your labs are high. If you have it with a Protein, it will help to slow the sugar response. I would eat it rather than drink it....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
