Food Smells Different.

Recommended Posts

So I'm almost three weeks post op and from the time I came home I notice food smells different but not in a good way some stuff smells awful. The other night my husband was making a chicken breast on the George Forman grill and I swear I had to leave the room it smelled so bad. Next door to the salon I work at is a Chinese restaurant which pre op always smelled delicious now when I walk out side I gag and have to breath through my mouth to not smell it. Has this happened to any one else?

Not the smelling bad part, I'm almost 2 weeks out. But I do feel like I have a bionic nose and can smell EVERYTHING more! It's weird!

I'm 9 days out. I agree my sense of smell is sharper. food still smells good but I can smell it from far away. Cigarette smoke makes me want to gag more then it did before the surgery.

Weird.

Yes, but not the the extent that you are experiencing. My sense of smell is more acute and I am much more sensitive to food textures too.

You're experience reminds me of being pregnant. I wonder too if this is something everybody goes thru.

I do hair and nails and right after surgery my smeller was on overdrive.. I could tell you which customers ate garlic the night before from about 2 feet away.

It has gotten back to normal now.

I couldn't really smell anything for the first 3 weeks, if i did, it was not appealing. I'd cook for my family things I couldn't eat and it wouldn't bother me in the least! I think the combination of no hunger pains, craving, and low smell ability made those first weeks tolerable. Now at 8 weeks out, my smeller and tastebuds are back! Now my healthy eating practices really have to work overtime...but it is SOOOO worth it!

My sense of smell is incredibly heightened! Some things do smell bad to me mostly because they can be overwhelming. I'm glad to hear that this goes away eventually!

I know it's just crazy it's like I smell the oil in things now. Today I started mushies so I was excited about mashed potatoes we went to KFC and I got my side of potatoes and my husband got his regular fried chicken. I was wanting to crunch something crazy bad so I put a piece of fried cruncy part of his chicken on top of my bite of potatoes. Yuck bad idea all I could taste was oil. I won't be doing that again! I guess it's not the worst thing that I didn't like the fried taste.

The first week I thought that I would have to get rid of my dogs and never be able to tolerate smells of any kind. Fortuantely for me things changed after the second week and the things that smelled so bad became tolerable. Hang in there.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
